Migraine and Homeostasis:What Can we Learn From Glucose

Migraine Headache

Patients with migraine often report that stressors such as skipping a meal can bring on a migraine whereas some patients report that their migraine improves with food. Few studies to date have looked at the relationship between blood glucose (sugar) and migraine. We are conducting this study to better understand whether or not changes in blood glucose levels can trigger migraine or provide relief during a migraine attack.

The Use of Autologous Mesenchymal Stem Cell Preparation for Treatment of Refractory Migraine

Chronic MigraineHeadache

The present study is being undertaken as a phase I study to determine the safety and feasibility of using adipose derived mesenchymal stem cell preparations (MSC) for treatment of CM. Intravenous and locally targeted stem cell treatment have already been reported in the context of treating various chronic pain conditions with early evidence of efficacy and a good safety profile. The treatment of CM is based on the model for treatment with botulinum where superficial facial and cranial injections are utilized. In addition, stem cells can be given intravenously as well.

Efficacy of a Transcranial Vibrating System for Mitigation of Migraine Associated Vertigo

DizzinessNausea2 more

Vertigo is among the most common symptoms associated with migraine and affects 26.5% of migraine sufferers, leading to a dramatic impact in life limiting even the most simple activities. A new device, the OtoBand, a transcranial vibrating system, has been shown to mitigate and sometimes prevent vertigo and nausea in healthy subjects. The current study aims to determine if the Otoband can treat or reduce symptoms of Migraine Associated Vertigo (MAV).

Effect of Breathing Techniques on Migraine Attacks and Severity

Migraine HeadachesBreathing Techniques

Background: Migraine is a very common neurobiological disorder caused by increased excitability of the Central Nervous System. It is among the causes of the highest morbidity worldwide. Migraine has considerable economic and social impact ; affects the quality of life of patients and disrupts work life, social activities and family life. To decrease the frequency and severity of migraine attacks may be the first goal than treating the attacks. The study was designed as a Parallel Group, Add on, Randomized Controlled Experiment in order to observe the effects of breathing techniques on migraine-like headaches, frequency and severity. Methods: Participants will be divided into 2 parallel arms, intervention and control (treatment as usual). Cluster randomization will be performed to prevent intergroup contamination. Breathing techniques will be taught to the intervention group by the researcher. Both groups will continue to use pharmacotherapy for migraine. Both groups will be evaluated with migraine disability level (MIDAS) at the beginning and end of the study. The primary output of the study is to evaluate the effect of breathing techniques on the frequency and severity of attacks in migraine-like headaches. The secondary output is to evaluate the effect of breathing techniques on the MIDAS level. Discussion: The results of the study will provide information about the effect of breathing techniques on migraine-like headaches. The results of this study will contribute to the literature, since migraine is among the chronic diseases and pharmacotherapy options are limited.

NLP Headache Speech (NLPH-SPEECH): a Cross-sectional Study on Natural Language Processing Analysing...

Headache Disorders

The research collects spoken descriptions of headache disorders by participants with headache disorders. The speech recordings are analyzed by natural language processing (NLP) tools to analyse linguistic properties of the texts and to obtain insight into the potential of NLP machine learning models for the recognition of headache syndromes of the participants.

Clinical Applications of High-Frequency Oscillations

HealthyEpilepsy5 more

The objective of this study is to use high-frequency brain signals (HFBS) to localize functional brain areas and to characterize HFBS epilepsy, migraine and other brain disorders. We hope to build the world's first high-frequency MEG/MEG/ECoG/SEEG database for the developing brain. HFBS include high-gamma activation/oscillations, high-frequency oscillations (HFOs), ripples, fast ripples, and very high frequency oscillations (VHFOs) in the brain. To reach the goals, we have developed several new MEG/EEG methods: (1) accumulated spectrogram; (2) accumulated source imaging; (3)frequency encoded source imaging; (4) multi-frequency analysis; (5)artificial intelligence detection of HFOs; (6) Neural network analysis (Graph Theory); and (7) others (e.g. ICA, virtual sensors).

InfluenCEF Study: Study on the Headache Associated With Influenza Infection

Headache DisordersInfluenza -Like Illness3 more

The goal of this observational analytic study with a cohort desing is to evaluate the epidemiology, risk factors and clinical phenotype of headache during Influenza infection. The study will be done in collaboration with the Healthcare Sentinel Network of Castile and Leon (Red Centinela Sanitaria de Castilla y León, RCSCYL) and the National Influenza Center of Valladolid (CNGV). First, the historical data of the VIGIRA network of the 2010-2022 flu seasons will be analyzed, assessing the epidemiology and risk factors of headache during Influenza infection; and second, a study with a case series design with prospective follow-up will be carried out for the incident cases of the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 Influenza seasons, evaluating the clinical phenotype and the duration of the headache.

Migraine With Aura and Patent Foramen Ovale: Identification of Biomarkers to Select Patients In...

Migraine HeadachePFO - Patent Foramen Ovale

This is a multicenter prospective observational study aimed to asses whether a specific prothrombotic platelet phenotype can discern migraine patients with PFO (patent forame ovale) - related symptoms from patients with incidental PFO. The study will also explore additional distinguishing features of causal and incidental PFO using a metabolomics approach. It involves the enrollment of well-characterized patient cohorts and an ex vivo approach using comparative cell biology models that reproduce the most critical aspects of the clinical scenario.
