Effect of Transmagnetic Stimulation on Conditioned Pain Modulation (CPM)

HeadacheMigraine

While some indications of the neural circuits involved in the Conditioned Pain Modulation (CPM) process are now available, there is still need to clarify what parts of the brain are essential for this process, whether the spino-brainstem loop is largely sufficient to explain CPM or whether other cerebral and spinal regions such as frontal, somatosensory and other cortical regions contribute substantially. Whereas mere observation of correlation between these circuits while activated by brain imaging is still of considerable interest, direct experimental manipulations by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) could even establish insights into causal relationships.

Patent Foramen Ovale in Children With Migraine Headaches

Migraine Headaches

This study will be the first to provide data about the relationship between PFO and migraine in children. By establishing the actual prevalence, we will better understand if PFO plays a role in the occurence of pediatric migraine and, thus, provide the incentive to perform additional studies evaluating whether PFO closure is an effective treatment option for pediatric migraine. For children with migraine headaches, discovering novel and effective treatments would be life altering.

Study of MIGRA-ZEN RELIEF PLUS In the Treatment of Chronic Migraine Headache

Chronic Migraine

The purpose of this study is to study MIGRA-ZEN RELIEF PLUS, an all-natural herbal dietary supplement product, with respect to alleviating and/or stopping migraine headache pain compared to a placebo when used prophylactically. This study will involve subjects suffering from chronic migraine headaches.

Headache Inducing Characteristics and Possible Changes in Cerebral Blood Flow After Administration...

HeadacheMigraine

Before, during and after intravenous administration of PGE2 we score/measure headache, rCBF, blood flow in the middle cerebral artery and diameter of superficial temporal artery and correlate that to known pathophysiology of headache to see if PGE2 is involved in headache pathophysiology.

A Study Comparing Two Spinal Techniques for for Cesarean Delivery Anesthesia

HypotensionHeadache

The purpose of this study is to compare single shot versus sequential bolus spinal technique via a catheter in patients undergoing Cesarean Section. We aim to determine which technique results in less blood pressure reduction and subsequent vasopressor use. Other study endpoints include the incidence of maternal post dural puncture headaches and nausea and vomiting. In addition blood and CSF will be collected to see if biochemical mediators are related to wound hyperalgesia and healing.

Saccadometry in Primary Headache Syndromes

MigraineCluster Headache2 more

Migraine is one of the commonest neurological disorders, affecting up to 12% of the general population, but remains relatively under-diagnosed and under-treated. Migraine has a wide socioeconomic impact and brings a large economic burden; estimates suggest that disability due to migraine costs > €27 billion per annum across Europe. Despite its prevalence and impact, migraine pathophysiology is poorly understood. A wider understanding of the functional changes in this disorder would be beneficial to both diagnosis and treatment. Saccades are the rapid eye movements we make when moving the eyes to a new object in our visual field. Reaction time studies have been used to investigate Huntington's disease and Parkinson's disease with great success. These use saccadic tasks (monitoring eye movements). Even at rest we make approximately three saccades per second, so a lot of data can quickly be gathered with non-invasive testing. We hope to understand more of the underlying mechanisms of migraine by studying reaction time in migraine patients. Our previous pilot study, with less stringent inclusion and exclusion criteria, looked at fewer patients (32 migraineurs and 32 controls), and found that migraineurs showed significantly different saccadic patterns to non-migraineurs. This study firstly seeks to corroborate the saccadometric findings of our earlier pilot study in a group of migraineurs, and secondly to explore the specificity of these findings in migraine by also studying patients with another primary headache syndrome, namely cluster headache. Migraine is known to be a dynamic disorder, with previous studies showing longitudinal changes in the migraine brain. To explore this further we hope to record longitudinally (Every day for 21 days) in a small subset of migraineurs to identify potential longitudinal changes in saccadic reaction time. Because of the portability of the equipment this could be done in the subjects own home if they preferred.
