Sound Processing. ( A Feasibility, Prospective, Repeated-measures Investigation to Investigate Innovations...
Hearing LossThis is a feasibility, prospective with sequential enrolment, multicenter, clinical investigation in adults and paediatrics with a CE approved Nucleus cochlear implant. Subjects older than 5 years will be included. Subjects will be screened and up to 120 eligible subjects will be recruited in the clinical investigation. Subjects will attend scheduled study visits over a period up to 5 years in different sub-studies as described in the sub-study documentation. A clinical setting can consist of therapeutic elements and evaluations. Subjects will be assessed with the commercially available Nucleus sound processor or via the xPC, NIC, etc. if required. Acute testing will be done where possible. Take home use will be applied when learning effects may play a significant role and to evaluate the acceptance of the new or improved sound coding algorithm or signal processing, in as many listening environments as possible. The subject might also be asked to complete questionnaires, to perform at-home tests etc. during this take home use and/or at the clinical visits. The time for a clinical visit will be limited to a maximum of 4 hours. The time in between clinical visits will vary with typical spacing of between 0 (acute) to 4 weeks. The goals of this umbrella investigation are to measure hearing outcomes to assess performance and/or to achieve higher convenience for implant users and hearing care professionals. The outcomes of the study will guide Cochlear to select features for inclusion in future Nucleus cochlear implant systems and/or future models of care.
Evaluation of the Effect of a Spatial Localization Training Program on Auditory Comprehension
Hearing LossCochlearHearing comprehension under complex listening conditions is considered to be the central complaint of everyday life for patients with cochlear implants. Localization is one of the cues for listening comprehension. However, only few studies have investigated the effect of spatial localization training on listening comprehension performance in noise. None of these studies correspond to the desire to purpose training by speech therapists while using affordable equipment. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of a spatial localization training protocol in cochlear bi-implanted subjects with post-lingual deafness on their ability to understand in noise. 2 groups of 10 subjects each will be recruited: a patient group and a control group. The patient group will undergo 8 sessions of spatial localization rehabilitation lasting an average of 45 minutes each. After this programme, the pre-test and post- test results obtained will be compared.
Hearing Aid Performance Study for Different Spatial Configurations
Hearing LossThis clinical investigation will extend the evaluation of perception of speech in different listening environments with hearing aids available on the market (from Phonak). The clinical investigation is divided in three parts addressing different challenges met by hearing aid users.
Benefits of Tablet-based Serious Games to Promote Speech Production in Young Children With Hearing...
DeafnessHearing LossLearning to speak is a major challenge for children with hearing impairments. Nowadays, special devices such as conventional hearing aids, bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHA) or cochlear implants (CI) allow successful rehabilitation of patients with hearing disabilities. To obtain maximum benefit from these technical aids, instrumented hearing impaired children require specific and intensive speech therapy to compensate for speech development delays. In addition, it is also of primary importance that during daily life (e.g., at home, at school) children are provided with sufficient and good quality auditory stimulation. The main goal of this project is to encourage speech production with an edutainment tool that can be used at home and that is adapted to the specific needs of young hearing impaired children. For this purpose, the investigators have recently designed an innovative educational solution: FunSpeech, a tablet-based set of video games that respond exclusively to sound and speech. The aim of this serious game is to encourage hearing impaired children to produce controlled sounds in terms of rhythm, intensity, and pitch. These are the main abilities required for controlled speech production. Finally, this serious game aims to support the parents' key role in the speech learning process by offering an effective solution that is easy to use at home with young children.
Variability In Hearing Aid Outcomes In Older Adults
Hearing LossPresbycusisThe goal of this project is to find out if the way a hearing aid processes a sound signal should be determined in part by an individual's cognitive characteristics. We anticipate that the outcome of this work will be a battery of assessments that will guide hearing aid processing for older patients with hearing loss.
Assessing and Addressing Behaviors in Children With Hearing Loss
Hearing LossAttention Deficit and Disruptive Behavior Disorders1 morePurpose: This study is a feasibility trial of an existing evidence-based behavioral parent training program with parents of preschool-aged children who were born deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). The hypotheses of this study are (a) that a randomized control trial of the Family Check Up with this population will be feasible, (b) parents will rate the intervention as acceptable, and (c) a signal of effect will be observable among intervention group parents compared to controls for the following outcome variables: child behaviors, parenting behaviors, and parenting sense of competence.
A Pilot Study to Evaluate Patient Tolerance and Nursing Ease-of-Use of a Novel Hearing Protection...
Hearing ImpairmentBefore they are born, babies are protected from hearing very loud noises by their mother's bodies. After delivery, they are exposed to many loud noises that are potentially harmful. These noises happen in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The purpose of this research project is to test the fit and the ease-of-use of a new device that may protect infant's hearing in the NICU.
Clinically Implementing Online Hearing Support Within Hearing Organization
Hearing ImpairmentPrevious research has proposed employing telehealth in hearing healthcare to improve clinical care and increase access to hearing services. Several studies have shown that hearing support can be carried out without in-person meetings and lead to significant benefits for hearing aid users. Interventions for persons with hearing impairment improve communication and improve outcomes more than hearing aid use alone. The first purpose of this study is needs-oriented and the second purpose is research-oriented. The needs-oriented purpose of this project is to, via a national website of health information and services for Sweden, provide needed online support to hearing aid users. The research-oriented purpose of this project is to document the effectiveness of the online support compared to traditional support that the Hearing Organization, provides ("standard care").
Effects of Pulses on Loudness
Hearing LossCochlearThe aim of this study is to investigate the effect of varying additional factors on loudness summation in Neuro Zti Cochlear Implant users.
Community Health Workers and Teleaudiology as a Culturally-relevant Approach to Improving Access...
Hearing LossThe purpose of this study is to test the feasibility of a teleaudiology intervention with assistance from Community Health Workers to improve access to hearing health care.
