The Hearing Resources and Outcomes in the Emergency Department Pilot (HERO-ED Pilot), gathers preliminary data and hones procedures and measures, prior to undertaking HERO-ED. Since the HERO-ED Pilot does not involve random assignment (no control group), it will not test device effectiveness. However, the HERO-ED Pilot will test device acceptability and use. It will also provide preliminary data on, and allow us to fine-tune, the measures of effectiveness that we plan to use in HERO-ED

Introduction: Oral health is considered as a vital component of overall health and its importance in children may not be disregarded. In children with hearing impairment, communication barriers may hamper their understanding of oral hygiene practices, making them particularly vulnerable to dental problems. Objective: The objective of this study was to compare effectiveness of skit video, pictorial and sign language interventions to improve oral hygiene status of children with hearing impairment. Methods: Sixty children were completed the study and allocated randomly into each group with twenty children as follows: group A: Skit video, group B: Pictorial, and group C: Sign language. Mean gingival and OHI scores were recorded before and after implementation of interventions. Oral hygiene habits, oral hygiene and gingival index scores were recorded by structured questionnaire.

A phase 2 trial with LY3056480 in patients with stable SNHL

This study involves research. Some chemotherapeutic drugs that can permanently reduce hearing are termed "ototoxic". One such drug is the chemotherapy called cisplatin. Currently, if a patient is receiving cisplatin, hearing is tested in the Audiology Clinic using lengthy protocols and may be retested only when it is requested by their oncologist and when the Veteran can arrange an appointment. Researchers think that hearing testing prior to every treatment of cisplatin may reduce the number of Veterans who get disabling hearing loss from treatment. The purpose of this study is to compare the current method of monitoring hearing (audiology clinic protocols termed "usual care") with a new portable hearing monitoring program (a comprehensive program of ototoxicity monitoring termed "COMP-VA") that tests hearing using a portable hearing testing audiometer and a variety of efficient tools and techniques so that testing can occur prior to each cisplatin treatment at any quiet location in the hospital.

Hearing loss is the most prevalent service-connected disability in the VA. It causes communication difficulties, which contribute to isolation, frustration and depression. A major cause of hearing loss is from exposure to high levels of sound, and is referred to as Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). Veterans have inevitably been exposed to high levels of sound during military service, and even though they may not yet have NIHL, their ears have been damaged. Continued noise exposure in civilian life will result in NIHL. However, it can easily be prevented by avoiding noise or using hearing protection. Most people are unaware that noise damages hearing, and even when they are, they do not use hearing protection. In this study we will use a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the short- and long-term effectiveness of two forms of education about NIHL that we have developed for Veterans. One is a computerized program; the other is a Hearing Conservation Brochure

Farm and rural youth have frequent exposure to hazardous noise on the farm and recreationally, and have an increased prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). There is a lack of programs to prepare this high-risk population to use hearing conservation strategies. This randomly-controlled trial of innovative community-based interventions is designed to compare effectiveness and sustainability of approaches to increase youths' use of hearing conservation strategies. Consistent use of hearing conservation strategies is expected to reduce rates of NIHL and other negative effects of high noise exposure, and improve quality of life in this high-risk and underserved group.

The purpose of this clinical study is to validate the comparability of prescription formula fitting of hearing aids based on full diagnostic audiometry and SelfFit interactive fitting of hearing aids based on hearing loss screening (mild to moderate hearing losses) using in-situ audiometry, provided and executed through the mobile medical app.

Busy Primary Care providers (PCPs) have complex practices with many competing demands, making it difficult to improve their HL identification rates. Little research has been conducted to identify effective approaches to address the poor PCP knowledge and provide tools for them to better identify/refer patients with HL for appropriate intervention. Current data suggests there is a critical need to redesign how PCPs deliver hearing health care (HHC) by developing focused educational programs and simple clinical management tools to help them integrate HHC into their practices. To address this need, this study will educate providers on hearing loss (HL) screening/treatment as well as create a Best Practice Alert (BPA), or clinical prompt, that is configured for maximal effectiveness in reminding PCPs to ask their patients if they think they have a HL. This combination of education for providers and clinical reminder could help increase HL screening rates but how much is not clear. This 5 year R21/R33 study funded by National Institute of Deafness and Communicative Disorders seeks to provide detailed understanding of both how educating providers on HL and the use of an effective BPA affects HL screening rates and identification for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.

The aim of this project is to develop evidence that can inform hearing health care best practices for adults between the ages of 65-75, and determine what level of involvement by the primary care practitioner (PCP) is required to inform and encourage adults age 65-75 to follow through with routine hearing screening. This study also aims to evaluate the accuracy of assessment of medical conditions for which the FDA requires physician evaluation and management prior to hearing aid fitting, and determine which medical conditions should require medical evaluation prior to hearing aid fitting. The results of this study should provide information to implement changes in health care policy to facilitate accessible and affordable hearing health care.
