Cognitive Intervention to Improve Working Memory

Single Ventricle Heart Disease

Adolescents with single ventricle heart disease (SVHD) (10 males and 10 females) with mild to moderate cognitive impairment will participate in a total of 25 computer-based working memory training sessions, each 30-40 minutes (5 days a week for 5 weeks) supervised by a trained coach. Primary objective is to evaluate the impact of the Cogmed intervention on working memory scores and the secondary objective to assess brain tissue changes with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) techniques, measures of mean diffusivity pre- and post-intervention.

Long-term Effects of CPAP on Lipidemia and Hs-CRP Levels in OSA Patients

Obstructive Sleep ApneaCoronary Heart Disease

The increased risk of atherosclerotic morbidity and mortality in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been linked to hypertension, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and systemic inflammation. The relationship regarding obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and lipidemia and systemic inflammation is far from conclusion for obesity as a strong confounding factor.

Phase I Safety and Feasibility Study of Intracoronary Delivery of Autologous Bone Marrow Derived...

Congenital Heart Disease

The objective of this study is to determine the safety and feasibility of autologous mononuclear cells (MNC) collected from bone marrow (BM) and intracoronary delivery for individuals with declining performance of their single right ventricle systemic pumps. This procedure has the potential to foster a new strategy for congenital heart patients. This is an open-label study of autologous MNC derived from bone marrow with a 2-year follow-up to document 1) related serious adverse events and 2) monitor changes in cardiac structure and function.

Role of Cerebral Oximetry In Reducing Delirium After Complex Cardiac Surgery

Cardiac Disease

Delirium after cardiac surgery is reported in a range of 3-47% of patients. Delirium is a serious complication that results in prolonged length of stay, increased health care costs and is associated with higher death rates. The exact cause involved in the development of delirium after cardiac surgery is unclear. The latest advancement in near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) Oximetry offers real-time management of patients at risk of brain injury. This approved device will monitor cerebral oxygenation during and 24hr after cardiac surgery, recording oxygenation in real time allowing the clinical team the opportunity to intervene early to prevent ischemia and possibly preventing untoward events. Adverse events followed include, but are not limited to, stroke, (transient ischemic attacks), heart attack, (myocardial infarction), clots found in lungs (pulmonary embolism), kidney failure, pneumonia, cause of death for 30-days after surgery (all cause mortality). Hypothesis: Perioperative restoration of rSO2 desaturation to baseline values results in lower delirium rates after complex cardiac surgery.

Supplementation With Polyphenol-Rich Foods and Atrial Fibrillation After a Cardiac Surgery

Coronary Heart Disease

Post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality after a cardiac surgery. Both systemic inflammation and oxidative stress play a role in the initiation of POAF after a cardiac surgery. Epidemiological studies show a significant inverse correlation between cardiovascular risk and consumption of polyphenol-rich foods (PRFs), due to antioxidant, vasorelaxant and antithrombotic properties of their polyphenolic components. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of polyphenol-rich food supplementation on post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) in patients undergoing an open heart surgery (mainly coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG) and valve replacement or repaired (VR))
