Treatment of Central Sleep Apnoea in Patients With Heart Failure With Nasal High Flow Therapy (nHFT)...

Central Sleep ApneaCheyne-Stokes Respiration

To investigate whether nHFT is an effective treatment for patients with Chronic Heart Failure (CHF) and central sleep apnea (CSA). This study is a prospective one armed uncontrolled intervention pilot study investigating 4 weeks of nHFT at home in 10 patients with CHF and CSA.

Syncardia 50cc TAH-t as a Bridge to Transplant

Heart FailureRight-Sided3 more

The primary objective of the study is to evaluate whether the 50cc TAH-t can safely support, and provide probable benefit to, transplant-eligible pediatric patients (aged 10 - 18 years) and can safely and effectively support transplant-eligible adult patients (aged 19 - 75 years) at imminent risk of death from biventricular failure without experiencing permanent disabling, stroke-related deficits. The study will be conducted as a three-arm trial of the 50cc temporary Total Artificial Heart (TAH-t) as a bridge to transplant: The Primary Pediatric Arm of the trial will evaluate the safety and probable benefit of the 50cc TAH-t for transplant-eligible patients 10 through 18 years of age. The Primary Adult Arm of the trial will evaluate the safety and efficacy of the 50cc TAH-t for transplant-eligible patients 19 through 75 years of age. The Secondary Arm will capture pediatric and adult subjects who did not meet enrollment criteria for a Primary Arm, but meet the less restrictive Secondary Arm enrollment criteria, in order to further characterize the use of the device.

Evaluating the Use of Exenatide in People With Type 2 Diabetes and Diastolic Heart Failure

Diabetes MellitusType 22 more

People with type 2 diabetes experience heart failure more often than do people without diabetes. This may be due to increased stiffness in the heart as a result of diabetes. This study will examine whether exenatide, a medication used to treat diabetes, may have beneficial effects on the heart in people with type 2 diabetes and heart failure.

The Effect of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Congestive Heart Failure

Heart Failure

A diet rich in Omega-3 (fish oil) reduces plasma triglycerides and the risk for ischemic heart disease. Recently, a large trial evaluating treatment with Omega 3 in heart failure patients suggested that omega 3 may lower the risk of death from CHF. The mechanism of this potential benefit is not well understood. Methods: Forty patients will be enrolled in the study. Twenty patients will receive Omega 3 (lovaza 4 gm a day) and 20 patients will receive placebo. All subjects will have assessment of their exercise capacity and blood vessel function before and after an 8 week treatment period. About 4 table spoons of blood will be drawn throughout the study. Expected results: The investigators believe that omega 3 may improve the ability to exercise and improve blood vessel function.

Effect of Intramyocardial Injection of Mesenchymal Precursor Cells on Heart Function in People Receiving...

Heart Failure

Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are one treatment option for people with congestive heart failure. This study will evaluate the safety of injecting mesenchymal precursor cells (MPCs) into the heart during LVAD implantation surgery and examine if injecting MPCs into the heart is effective at improving heart function.
