Cognitive Training Intervention and Attitudes Towards Genetics

A pilot study to evaluate feasibility of enrollment of patients in an intervention to improve neurocognitive function in hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) survivors using the cognitive training Lumosity program. In addition, patients' interest in receiving information regarding genetic risk of cognitive impairment post-HCT will be measured.

Medical procedures can be a very frightening experience for children. It is known that children who received painful medical procedures can develop a higher sensitivity of pain during their following experiences. During their treatments for malignant diseases, children are exposed to a lot of painful procedures (eg. needle insertion, lumbar punction, myelogram, etc…) Therefore, medical societies propose the use of interventions like distraction techniques for pain management in complement of pharmacological treatment. In addition, the repetitions of painful procedures and ineffective prevention of pain can create care phobia. Within this context, immersive and participative virtual reality (VR) could be an innovative distraction technique for pain management among children undergoing medical procedures. Attention Pain Theory can explain how virtual reality can reduce the perception of pain. Attention is required to feel pain. When the patient is focused on another subject like an immersive virtual environment, his brain is less available to treat information like painful stimulus from care procedures. The investigators hypothesis is that VR can reduce procedural-related pain and can decrease fear during the following procedures. Results of previous studies are varied : some showed a non-significant reduction of patient's procedural pain despite the use of VR, whereas others concluded to a decrease of pain. The question of the benefit of VR for the patients who are exposed to repeated painful procedures remains still unclear, especially with patients who are likely to feel chronic pain or many pain-related exposures. The aim of this study is to evaluate the non-inferiority of virtual reality as a distraction technique for pain management in children and adolescents with onco-hematological diseases, undergoing painful procedures, compared to standard of care.

The rise of oral therapies in the management of cancers has considerably changed the patient care path. If the oral route is preferred by patients because it offers a better quality of life, it is not without impact for patients and the health professionals involved in their management in their care. Indeed, the use of the oral route shifts part of the responsibility for monitoring treatment towards the patient, thereby leading to compliance problems, drug interactions and the management of adverse effects.These risks can cause complications or compromise the effectiveness of treatment, and generate additional costs for the investigator's health system. The study proposes to involve Healthcare Facilities Pharmacist and the Dispensary Pharmacist with all other health professionals.First, the hospital pharmacist will operate before the initiation of an oral route to perform a clinical pharmaceutical analysis of drug prescriptions. Then after the primary prescription and finally during a follow-up consultation 3 months after the initiation of treatment. The hypothesis of the study is that the coordinated intervention of the hospital pharmacist and of the dispensary pharmacist would improve the tolerance of oral treatments by reducing the number of serious adverse effects found, as well as improve the, quality of life, patient and professional satisfaction

A study to assess the effect of multiple doses of venetoclax on the pharmacokinetics of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel in female participants with different hematological malignancies. Upon completion of this study, participants receiving clinical benefit in the opinion of the investigator and without any clinically significant evidence of disease progression with no access to venetoclax (not approved for the treated indication) may continue receiving venetoclax at the discretion of the investigator in a separate extension study.

The purpose of this project is to investigate the effects of 12 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and resistance training on several domains of health including physical function, cognitive function, mental health, and quality of life in patients who have undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT). In addition, the project will determine the effects of 12 weeks of HIIT and resistance training on physical function, caregiver strain, mental health, and caregiver confidence in individuals who are providing care for patients undergoing HCT.

Proof-of-Concept Trial of a Positive Psychology Intervention for Caregivers of HSCT Patients

Caregivers (i.e., family and friends) of patients with cancer are essential in providing care during cancer treatment. For patients who are undergoing a stem cell transplant (SCT) as treatment for their cancer, caregivers are even more crucial before, during, and after their transplantation. Although SCT is potentially curative for some patients with blood cancers, the treatment is intensive and accompanied by a prolonged hospitalization as patients recover from the toxic side-effects of chemotherapy and medical complications from the transplantation. Unsurprisingly, during the entire transplantation process, caregiver burden is high as caregivers witness and support their loved ones through multiple treatment related complications, management of ongoing physical symptoms and complex medication schedules. Caregiver burden leads to poor health outcomes including poor caregiver quality of life, fatigue, depression, anxiety, impaired physical health, low levels of resilience and positive emotions. Reducing distress and enhancing positive emotions can both reduce caregiver burden and improve caregiver quality of life. However, the few interventions in the SCT caregiver population have mostly focused on mitigating distress, despite strong evidence that enhancing positive emotions in caregivers reduces caregiver burden and promotes physical and psychological health. To address this gap, we hope to develop and test an intervention that emphasizes positive emotions in caregivers of SCT recipients. A scalable and accessible positive emotion based intervention tailored to the unique needs of SCT recipient caregivers provides a new line of behavioral intervention resources that could confer benefit to both caregivers and patients and could be generalizable to other cancer caregivers.
