Blood Ammonia as Predictor for Esophageal Varices and Risk of Bleeding
Chronic Liver DiseaseEsophageal VaricesAssessment of blood ammonia level as a non-invasive predictor for presence of EV and risk of bleeding
Single Dose of Tranexamic Acid and Blood Loss, in Elderly Patients With Hip Fracture
Blood LossSurgical3 moreThe aim of this study is to investigate the hypothesis that single dose of tranexamic acid (TXA) preoperatively will lower blood loss and transfusion rate in elderly patients with hip fractures (intertrochanteric or Subcapital), that will be treated with intramedullary nailing and cemented hemiarthroplasty respectively. After application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, patients will be randomized in two groups. Group 1 will include patients that receive preoperatively single dose of TXA (15mg/kg) and Group 2 will include patients that receive normal saline (control group).
Time to Specialized Admission in Case of Severe Brain Haemorrhage.
Spontaneous Subarachnoid HemorrhageSpontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhages (SAH) are a particularly severe type of stroke with a tendency to affect younger individuals than other types of stroke. The condition is time critical as early neurosurgical treatment is needed. The aim of this study is to determine the delay from when a patient with SAH calls the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to they are admitted to a neurosurgical department. Further, it is the aim to determine predictors for increased delay and to examine the accuracy of the triage tool used by the EMS.
Severe Leptospirosis in Non-tropical Areas
LeptospirosisIntensive Care Unit2 moreLeptospirosis is a worldwide zoonosis. The mortality of the disease is between 3,6% to 13%, and up to 48% for the severe leptospirosis. Only few studies exist on severe leptospirosis and none major multicentre on leptospirosis in intensive care units in Europe. The investigators conduct a retrospective multi centric study in metropolitan France in order to identify the characteristic, the treatments and the prognostic factors associated with mortality of sever leptospirosis.
Thoracic Ultrasound on Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding (ECOBLEDSTUDY)
Upper Gastrointestinal BleedingUpper Gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is a medical emergency and the most common cause of hospitalization associated with digestive disease. Proper initial resuscitation is the first step in the management of UGIB patients. Today, modern pulmonary ultrasound is used in different clinical settings, such as intensive care, emergency medicine and/or traumatology. In the last years, the use of this has been standardized both in internal medicine and in pulmonary medicine. The primary objective is to describe the findings of pulmonary ultrasound and its relationship with severity in patients with UGIB. The investigators will include all patients with UGIB. A pulmonary and vena cava ultrasound will be performed on admission to the emergency room, 10 minutes prior to endoscopy and 24 hours after having performed the endoscopy. The use of thoracic point-of-care ultrasound (TPOCUS) has been standardized in both internal and pulmonary medicine. There is a concern about the role of TPOCUS useful as a severity prognostic tool in patients with UGIB. The team proposes that TPOCUS is a severity prognostic tool in UGIB patients. Main Outcome: To describe the findings of TPOCUS in patients with variceal and non-variceal UGIB. Secondary Objectives: Correlate the presence of B-type lines on TPOCUS with mean arterial pressure in UGIB patients. Correlate the inferior vena cava diameter with the Model for End-stage Liver Disease scale in UGIB patients. Correlate the inferior vena cava diameter with the 48 hours post-admission mortality of UGIB patients. Authors design a prospective, longitudinal, descriptive study to identify the findings of TPOCUS in patients with variceal and non-variceal UGIB. Patients will be included in the study since May 15th through October 30th 2019, admitted to the University Hospital, "Dr. José E. González", Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León.

Autonomic Cardiovascular Control in Response to Blood Volume Reduction in Blood Donors
Autonomic DysfunctionAutonomic Imbalance1 moreThe function of the autonomic nervous system can be assessed using baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and heart rate variability (HRV). Decreased HRV has been shown to be predictive of morbidity and mortality in diverse medical conditions such as acute myocardial infarction, aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage, autoimmune diseases, sepsis and surgery. The function of the autonomic nervous system has not yet been investigated in a "pure hypovolemia" model. The aim of the current study is therefore to investigate and describe the function of the autonomic nervous system prior to, during and after reduction of blood volume in healthy blood donors.

Tourniquet PlacementWound PackingThis is a joint project by the White Plains School District and White Plains Hospital regarding the training of over 66 school personnel regarding the American College of Surgeons (ACS) "Stop the Bleed" campaign for mass casualty incidents. This project developed from an outreach from White Plains Hospital and an interest from the White Plains School District to work together to train staff in the event of a mass casualty incident / active shooter.
Global Impact of the COVID 19 Pandemic on Stroke Care, Cerebral Venous Thrombosis, and Subarachnoid...
StrokeA 1-year analysis of global selected stroke metric data will be conducted comparing the results during the Covid-19 pandemic to the pre-pandemic period. In most countries, this will correspond to March 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021. In some countries, the pandemic period would be adjusted for onset of case surge (i.e. China pandemic start date would begin earlier, i.e. January 2020). The specific metrics that will be analyzed include: ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attacks (TIA) hospitalizations intracranial hemorrhage hospitalizations cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) hospitalizations (with or without thrombocytopenia) CVT in-hospital mortality 4) aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage hospitalizations 5) mechanical thrombectomy 6) intravenous thrombolysis 7) ruptured aneurysm endovascular coiling 8) ruptured aneurysm clipping. 9) aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage admissions 10) SAH in-hospital mortality 11) SAH presentation by Hunt Hess Grade
The Relationship Between Superior Vena Cava Flow and Intraventricular Hemorrhage in Preterm Infants...
Preterm Intraventricular HemorrhageThe aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between superior vena cava (SVC) flow measurements within the first 24 hours of life and development of intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm born infants.
