Rifaximin in Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy
Hepatic EncephalopathyThe purpose of this study is to determine whether alteration of gut flora with rifaximin can lead to improvement in driving performance, psychometric test performance, and quality of life in patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) and cirrhosis in a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled trial.
Feasibility of an App-based Nutrition & Exercise Program in Cirrhosis
CirrhosisLiver1 moreThe personalized nutrition and exercise app was designed for use by individuals living with chronic conditions. The pilot study examines the acceptance and use of the online, interactive program to support self-management in cirrhosis.
The BRAINFOOD Trial to Prevent Recurrent Hepatic Encephalopathy.
CirrhosisAscites4 moreThis study is being completed for patients with cirrhosis, including patients with a prior history of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) to evaluate the feasibility and benefits of medically-tailored meals as an intervention. Patients will be enrolled from the University of Michigan and will complete the baseline assessments in-person or remotely. In addition participants will complete study related materials before, during and after treatment with medically-tailored meals (MTM). After completing the study meals, participants will return for follow-up or have this visit completed remotely as well as have an observational period for 12 more weeks.
Rifaximin Plus Lactulose Versus Lactulose Alone for the Treatment of Hepatic Encephalopathy: a Double...
Hepatic EncephalopathyThe study will be double blind with respect to rifaximin, and randomization will be performed using tables of computer-generated random numbers. All subjects will be followed up till the recovery of HE (primary end point) or 10 days whichever is earlier. In the Lactulose group (group A) patients will receive 30-60 ml of lactulose in 2 or 3 divided doses so that patient passes 2-3 semisoft stools per day along with placebo . In the lactulose plus rifaximin group (group B) patients will receive cap rifaximin 400mg three times a day along with lactulose. Primary endpoints will be recovery of overt HE patients who will not recover from HE after 10 days will be continued on the same treatment. Total duration of the study is 1 year.
Hyperproteic Diet Plus Lactobacillus Reuteri and Nitazoxanide in Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy...
Hepatic CirrhosisMinimal Hepatic EncephalopathyHepatic encephalopathy is a serious complication of cirrhosis which relays under the burden of diseases with therapeutical difficulties for its given morbidity and mortality and the high recurrence it poses. Its treatment remains a challenge for most of the cases. Even more, minimal hepatic encephalopathy is an entity that has an additional morbidity for it being a subclinical entity. As so, the investigators propose an auxiliary treatment for the management of such patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy, using a specific diet consisting on hyperproteic and fibre-rich foods along with two independent interventions, whether a probiotic, lactobacillus reuteri, or a drug, nitozoxanide, so to diminish the rate of progression to any clinical stage of hepatic encephalopathy and to revert minimal hepatic encephalopathy itself to none hepatic encephalopathy.
The Safety/Efficacy of Rifaximin With/Without Lactulose in Participants With A History of Recurrent...
Hepatic EncephalopathyCirrhosisThe purpose of the study is to evaluate if rifaximin alone or rifaximin plus lactulose delays the onset of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in participants with cirrhosis who have had a previous episode of HE.

Hepatic Encephalopathy: Lactulose or Polyethylene Glycol (H.E.L.P.)
Hepatic EncephalopathyHE3 moreThe purpose of this study is to evaluate whether the use of polyethylene glycol is superior and more safe in treating hepatic encephalopathy compared to lactulose and also to determine if treatment with polyethylene glycol will reduce the duration of hospital stay.
