Peginterferon alfa-2a has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat adults with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection with liver disease who have not been previously treated with interferon-alpha drugs (which improve immune system response to infection). Ribavirin has been approved by the FDA and is usually given in combination with interferon drugs such as peginterferon alfa-2a for treatment of chronic HCV. Recent research shows that Latino whites do not respond as well to treatment with peginterferon alfa-2a and ribavirin as non-Latino whites. Various factors such as excessive weight, gender, and insulin resistance were evaluated to explain this difference, but research suggests that underlying factors related to Latino or non-Latino background, possibly genetic and immune differences, may be affecting the response to HCV infection and treatment. However, more research is needed on the effectiveness of peginterferon and ribavirin in Latino subjects with HCV, and with combined and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection. Objectives: - To evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and viral response of peginterferon alfa-2a and ribavirin therapy for chronic hepatitis C in Latino participants with and without HIV co-infection. This is an observational study. The observed treatment is received and managed through their primary care.

A Pilot Study of Boceprevir for the Treatment of Genotype 6 HCV

Chronic Hepatitis C

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the antiviral efficacy of Boceprevir-based therapy for the treatment of genotype 6 chronic hepatitis C infection. Boceprevir has recently been approved for the treatment of genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C infection. Recent in vitro studies suggest similar efficacy against genotype 6 chronic hepatitis C infection. The investigators therefore hypothesise that: i) Boceprevir is a potent inhibitor of genotype 6 hepatitis C replication in vivo. ii) Boceprevir in combination with pegylated interferon-alpha and ribavirin for 24 weeks will cure a high proportion of patients chronically infected with genotype 6 chronic hepatitis C infection.

Grazoprevir/Elbasvir for Treatment of Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 4 Post Kidney Transplant

This is a prospective, interventional, case-control study at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in post-renal transplant patients who are receiving Grazoprevir/Elbasvir combination. Data will be compared with matched historical controls, which will be selected according to the following matching criteria: age, time from transplant to initiation of therapy. Only patients who completed at least 48 weeks of pegylated Interferon + Ribavirin therapy in the control group and 12 weeks of therapy on the case group will be enrolled. Any patient who received at least one dose of Grazoprevir/Elbasvir combination will be included in the safety analysis.

Chronic liver injury leads to the accumulation of proteins in the liver that form dense scars. Liver scar formation is typically a slow process that leads to major organ damage and loss of function over the course of many years. During scar formation the extracellular matrix in the liver changes. The type and quantity of extracellular collagen and other proteins change during tissue remodeling. Some of these changes can be detected by analyzing factors present in blood. Because of the lengthy time course, changes in the rate of liver scar formation and regression are very difficult measure; however, accurate measurements are needed in order to conduct trials of interventions aimed at preventing scar formation and/or promotion scar regression. Current methods have sub-optimal specificity and selectivity. The long term objective of the study is to identify serum proteins that can be used to accurately estimate rates of liver fibrosis progression and regression. The project focusses on a novel methodology that uses stable isotope labeling with deuterated water, D2O, to tag newly-synthesized proteins. Mass spectroscopy is used to identify individual proteins and to quantify the ratio of labeled protein to total protein. This ratio provides information about the rate of synthesis of the protein of interest. This method will be applied to specimens from patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection who are about to begin HCV treatment. Treatment is known to reduce liver inflammation and collagen content.

The objective of the study is to assess the safety and efficacy of Intron A (3 Mio I.E./m2, 3 times per week) and Rebetol (15 mg/kg/day) in children aged 3 to 17, treated in common medical practice at 10 sites in Germany. The primary objective is to determine if there are any new severe adverse events observed with this recently approved dosing regimen. The study will also evaluate the rates of eradication of the HCV virus. This study was terminated due to low enrollment. At the time of termination, 3 participants had enrolled. Therefore, these 3 participants transferred into study P04538 (NCT00727077) and will be included in the P04538 (NCT00727077) data reporting.
