A Study of Sustained Virological Response in Relation to IL28-b Expression in Treatment-Naïve Patients...

This multi-center, open-label study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of Pegasys (peginterferon alfa-2a) and Copegus (ribavirin) in relation to IL28-b gene expression in treatment-naïve patients with chronic hepatitis C genotype 1. Patients will receive Pegasys (180 mcg sc weekly) and Copegus ( 1'000 or 1'200 mg orally daily) for 48 weeks. Anticipated time of study treatment is 48 weeks, follow-up is 24 weeks.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of vaniprevir given in combination with pegylated interferon alfa-2b (PegIntron®/peg-IFN) and ribavirin (RBV) in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) Genotype I (GT 1) participants who relapsed after previous therapy with interferon-based therapy. The primary efficacy hypothesis is that the percentage of participants achieving sustained virologic response 24 weeks after completion of all study therapy (SVR24) in at least one of the vaniprevir 300 mg twice daily treatment regimens is greater than 20% (historical data of standard of care treatment).

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of steady-state concentrations of TMC435 (administered once a day) on the steady-state pharmacokinetics of ethinylestradiol and norethindrone (administered once a day) and on the levels of progesterone, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, in healthy female participants. Ethinlyestradiol and norethindrone are synthetic hormones, which constitute the oral contraceptive Ovysmen. Also the short-term safety and tolerability of the co-administration of TMC435 and Ovysmen will be studied. Steady-state is a term that means that the drug has been given long enough so that the plasma concentrations will remain the same with each subsequent dose. TMC435 is being investigated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Pharmacokinetics (PK) means how the drug is absorbed into the bloodstream, distributed in the body and eliminated from the body. A contraceptive is a method that prevents pregnancy.

This is an open-label, randomized, comparative, multicenter, 48-week study designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of combination treatment with pegylated interferon and ribavirin in adult subjects with a diagnosis of compensated chronic hepatitis C (hepatitis C virus (HCV)-ribonucleic acid (RNA) positive) (Genotype 1). All subjects will complete 24 weeks of treatment, termed the Pilot Treatment Program, after which all eligible subjects will be randomly assigned to one of two study groups. One group will be followed for an additional 48 weeks without study medication, while the other will be continuously treated for an additional 24 weeks and then followed for another 24 weeks without study medication. Sustained virologic response, defined as undetectable HCV-RNA in serum at the end of the follow-up period, will be measured along with other outcomes.

Health Behavior Feedback Study for Veterans With Hepatitis C

The purpose of this study was to explore whether a brief (3 session) intervention would impact health behavior of veterans with hepatitis C. The main focus of the intervention was on reduction of heavy drinking with patients who have liver disease. Other study goals were to increase the likelihood that patients would seek out substance use treatment and/or hepatitis C health care services. The study also tested the use of a liver function test called CDT/GGT in detecting heavy drinking. The main hypothesis was that a 3 session intervention with personalized feedback about health behavior would result in a reduction in alcohol use and increased use of substance use treatment and hepatology health care.

Interferon Treatment for Patients With Chronic Hepatitis C and End Stage Renal Disease

The treatment response with conventional interferon alpha alone in patients with end stage renal disease and chronic hepatitis C is about 33-39%. However, the drop-out rate is 17-29.6%. Pegylated interferon alpha, a newly developed form of interferon with superior pharmacokinetic profiles, has not been used to treatment these patients. We expect the better treatment response treated with peginterferon alpha than conventional interferon. In addition, we also observe the safety of the two drugs during the study. The goal of the study is to compare the efficacy and safety of the two different treatment regimens in patients with chronic hepatitis C and end stage renal disease.
