The purpose of this study is to determine whether oral Valtrex alone or in combination with aspirin will reduce the shedding of herpes simplex virus DNA in the tears and saliva from volunteers with no evidence of ocular herpes infection. The secretion of virus into the tears and saliva might make people more susceptible to virus infection in the future if their immune system becomes deficient. The study will also try to determine if there is a correlation between shedding of viral DNA and herpes virus antibodies in serum and to determine if subjects are carriers of a special form of a gene in their blood cells, the presence of which may suggest the possibility of an increased susceptability to herpes and to Alzheimer's disease and heart disease.

The aim of this study is to compare the safety, specificity, sensitivity and ease of procedure of two potential diagnostic assays for HSV-1 detection in the cornea. Through the use of this new diagnostic assay, correct and early intervention would not only reduce corneal scarring from HSK, but it would also allow the initiation of appropriate treatment for HSV mimicking keratitis. HSV-1 infection of the eye can result in corneal scarring and blindness. Early diagnosis of this condition and appropriate treatment is of utmost importance. Various ocular surface conditions can mimic herpetic keratitis in their clinical presentation and can result in diagnostic confusion. Inappropriate or delayed treatment of herpetic corneal disease results in increased morbidity. In the UK at present clinical presentation is the mainstay of diagnosis. Unfortunately these cases often present to the most inexperienced clinical staff resulting in variability in diagnostic acumen. This often results in a delay or inappropriate diagnosis of herpetic keratitis. Laboratory techniques presently available to aid diagnosis are infrequently used in clinical practice. There are various reasons for their lack of use. Historically viral culture techniques were the mainstay of investigation but were slow, requiring weeks to provide a result. PCR is now replacing culture techniques and is relatively quick, reliable and sensitive. Many clinicians within the UK are still not fully informed of these advances and are therefore not utilizing these techniques to supplement clinical diagnosis. We propose to investigate the use of topically applied fluorescent antibody against active replicating HSV-1 in a droplet form and real time PCR detection of the virus. If successful this should increase the potential diagnostic capabilities of GPs and other less experienced health care workers. Such tests should reduce variability in diagnosis and the dependency on experienced ophthalmologists to diagnose the condition.

Despite the significant benefits of herpes zoster vaccine (HZV), vaccination rates remain low. Electronic medical records (EMR) can serve as a practical strategy to better facilitate the application of preventative health care, such as increasing immunization rates. A new care model that can increase the herpes zoster vaccination rate, as well as other preventative health services, is warranted. The objective of this study is to investigate if the functions of an EMR, in combination with a pharmacist as part of the care team, can improve the herpes zoster vaccination rate.

This study is a follow-up study from Study GEN-003-002 to evaluate long-term efficacy and immunogenicity of GEN-003 in subjects with genital HSV-2 infection.

A five-month-old healthy girl who presented with painful herpetic gingivostomatitis and perioral vesicles.

Palatability testing of a new paediatric formulation of valacyclovir in children 4-12 years of age and at least one of their parents. Children will be included, who received (val)acyclovir prophylaxis in the past, or will probably need it in the future i.e. children with primary immune deficiency or cancer.

This study examined the efficacy, safety and benefits of modern treatment and changes in the dynamics of the life of adult patients quality with severe herpes simplex in the current medical practice when combined therapy by acyclic nucleoside Valacyclovir and antiviral agent Kagocel versus monotherapy by Valacyclovir. This study also evaluated the structure of herpesvirus infections and the rate of mixed variants of the course, the rate of exacerbations of herpes simplex, the time of disappearance of human herpesvirus isolation and the features of the immune phenotype of patients taking different types of therapy.

Understudied drugs will be administered to children per standard of care as prescribed by their treating caregiver and only biological sample collection during the time of drug administration will be involved. A total of approximately 7000 children aged <21 years who are receiving these drugs for standard of care will be enrolled and will be followed for up a maximum of 90 days. The goal of this study is to characterize the pharmacokinetics of understudied drugs for which specific dosing recommendations and safety data are lacking. The prescribing of drugs to children will not be part of this protocol. Taking advantage of procedures done as part of routine medical care (i.e. blood draws) this study will serve as a tool to better understand drug exposure in children receiving these drugs per standard of care. The data collected through this initiative will also provide valuable pharmacokinetic and dosing information of drugs in different pediatric age groups as well as special pediatric populations (i.e. obese).

This study is designed to compare the performance of the Focus Diagnostics' HerpeSelect® Express, a Herpes Simplex Virus 2 Rapid Test, to a currently marketed device. The intent is to show the rapid test device is comparable to the currently marketed device. HerpeSelect® Express is a rapid test intended for qualitatively detecting the presence or absence of human IgG class antibodies to herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in human whole blood (capillary).

The purpose of this study is to provide biomedical and behavioral information that is necessary for planning and starting HIV prevention trials in Lima, Peru. The occurrence of HIV is high among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Lima, Peru, and bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HSV-2 (genital herpes) are very prevalent in HIV-positive and -negative MSM there. Methods to reduce both HIV and STDs are urgently needed among MSM in Peru. The information gained from this study is very important for future HIV prevention and vaccine trials that will take place in Peru.
