HIP: HIV Intervention for Providers

HIV Infections

The purpose is to encourage Provider participants to evaluate high risk HIV transmission behaviors and offer prevention messages to their HIV+ patients which will, in turn, reduce rates of unprotected anal and/or vaginal sex with partners of known HIV sero-negativity or unknown HIV serostatus. It is hypothesized that patients of providers participating in the HIP intervention will report higher reduction in sexual risk practices, when compared to the patients of the providers who were randomized into the control condition.

Treatment With Nelfinavir or Efavirenz of HIV-Infected Patients Who Have Never Received Anti-HIV...

HIV Infections

The purpose of this study is to compare two drugs (nelfinavir [NFV] and efavirenz [EFV]) used in start-up anti-HIV treatment. Doctors want to see if one is better than the other in extending the time that viral load (level of HIV in the blood) is kept low. The study will also look at the response of the immune system to each drug.

Positive Affect Promotion to Empower Optimal Adherence to HIV Therapy

HIV/AIDS

This study assesses the feasibility and acceptability of the APPEAL program, a 3-session intervention designed to promote positive affect among men and women living with HIV infection. Forty participants will be randomly assigned to receive the APPEAL program, and another 40 will receive standard of care. All participants will complete self-reported assessments at baseline and at 3 and 6 months, and will have their HIV antiretroviral medication adherence monitored as part of study participation.

Missed Opportunities to Pre-exposure Prophylaxis for HIV Infection on Person Newly Diagnosed With...

Virus-HIV

Missed opportunity to pre-exposure prophylaxis is a survey study that will be addressed to newly infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) persons. The purposes of this study is to understand why despite the fact that pre-exposure prophylaxis exist, these persons have been contaminated with HIV.

Helping Men Have Healthy Babies

HIV/AIDSHIV Prevention

Many men living with HIV (MLWH) want to have children. HIV-RNA suppression can minimize sexual HIV transmission risks while allowing for conception. The study will evaluate a safer conception intervention that leverages men's motivations to have healthy babies in order to promote serostatus disclosure and early ART initiation. The intervention is based on the investigators' Safer Conception Conceptual Framework, which considers individual, dyadic, and structural factors that affect periconception risk behavior.

Boston ARCH 4F Intervention to Reduce Fall Risk in People With HIV and Alcohol Use

HIV InfectionAlcohol Consumption3 more

This study is being conducted to assess the acceptability and feasibility of a randomized trial of a 10 week virtual intervention to reduce fall risk in people with HIV who consume alcohol. The hypothesis is that this randomized trial of the fall prevention intervention will be found to be feasible and acceptable in this pilot stage. Standardized assessments will be administered in-person at Boston University Medical Campus to assess various domains including fall risk, fear of falling, physical performance measures (such as grip strength, balance, and gait speed), substance use, and other related measures. The intervention has 3 main components: home exercises, virtual group sessions and weekly phone check-ins. Home exercise will be customized to match the current fitness level of participants. Participants will be asked to complete assigned exercises 3 times per week. Additionally, there will be a weekly virtual group session led by an Occupational Therapist trained in group facilitation via Zoom. The virtual group sessions will be used to help answer any questions and lead a discussion around challenges related to falls. Finally, a member of the research team will check-in with participants once per week to answer any remaining questions that participants have, provide individual feedback on exercises, and set up reminders for the upcoming week. Reminders will be tailored to the individual participant's needs to remind the participant to complete the intervention's components.

Non Invasive Oral Cancer Screening Among HIV Infected Individuals

Malignant Neoplasms of Mesothelial and Soft TissueHuman Immunodeficiency Virus

The goal of this clinical research study is to learn how a new method for performing oral (mouth) exams can help doctors check for suspicious lesions (called premalignant and malignant oral lesions [PMOL]) in the mouth of HIV-infected smokers.

A Safety and Immune Response Study of 2 Experimental HIV Vaccines

HIV Infection

The HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) is doing a study to test a new HIV vaccine combination. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. 252 people are taking part in this study at multiple sites. The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) is paying for the study. The investigators are doing this study to answer several questions. Are the study vaccines safe to give to people? Are people able to take the study vaccines without becoming too uncomfortable? How do people's immune systems respond to the study vaccines? (Your immune system protects you from disease.)
