Does Treating Hookworm Improve Productivity of Small Subsistence Farmers
Hookworm Stool BurdenAnemia1 moreTreatment of hookworm infected groups with albendazole has been shown to result in an increase in hemoglobin levels and a related decrease in the prevalence of anemia. Increases in hemoglobin levels due to treatment have been associated with significant gains in adult labor productivity. In this study, the investigators hypothesize that regular treatment of women smallholder farmers in a high prevalence area with the anti-hookworm drug albendazole and iron supplementation will improve hookworm associated anemia. Further, regular treatment of albendazole and iron supplementation will improve their work capacity when compared to a control group
Prevalence of Hookworm Infection and Community Preparedness for Hookworm Vaccine Trials in Endemic...
Hookworm InfectionNa-ASP-2 is a protein expressed during the larval stage of the N. americanus hookworm life cycle. In a clinical study in previously hookworm-infected adults in Brazil, this protein induced urticarial reactions (rash) in a subset of volunteers. The clinical trial component of this study involves skin testing for immediate-type hypersensitivity to the Na-ASP-2 Antigen. Both prick-puncture and intradermal tests will be applied.
Development of a Skin Test for the Na-ASP-2 Hookworm Antigen
Hookworm InfectionAllergyNa-ASP-2 is a protein expressed during the larval stage of the N. americanus hookworm life cycle. In a clinical study in previously hookworm-infected adults in Brazil, this protein induced urticarial reactions (rash) in a subset of volunteers. This study will evaluate solutions of varying concentrations of the protein in both a skin prick-puncture and intradermal test that will eventually be used to screen volunteers living in hookworm endemic areas who are being considered as potential participants in vaccine trials, to reduce the potential of inducing allergic reactions in those vaccinated with the Na-ASP-2 Hookworm Vaccine.
Soil-transmitted Helminth Reinfection Rates After Single and Repeated School Hygiene Education
HelminthiasisAscaris Infection4 moreSoil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, or hookworm, affect approximately 1.5 millions individuals primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. STHs infections have been associated with delay in growth and development in children. The prevalence in Indonesia varied from 45% to 65%, but in poor sanitation areas the prevalence can increased to 80%. World Health Organization currently recommends mass treatment with benzimidazoles and health hygiene education to control the disease. In this study we evaluated the effectiveness of single and four-monthly health hygiene education to STH reinfection rates among school-aged children in Mandailing Natal district, North Sumatera province, Indonesia.

MalariaFalciparum2 moreThe aim of this study is to investigate the change in iron metabolism in relation to malaria and helminth infections using a stable isotope technique.
Hookworm Immune Regulation Project
Hookworm InfectionThe main objective of this study is to characterize the regulatory immune response induced by hookworm in an infected Vietnamese rural population from the periphery of HCM, evolution after infection treatment and during potential naturally reinfection.
