In this study we are trying to understand whether previous infection with a particular virus, namely cytomegalovirus (CMV), influences the ability of the immune system to respond to new infections or vaccinations with age.

The purpose of this study is to assess the serologic and cell-mediated immune response to licensed live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) and inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) in children 5-17 years old. The effects of prior infection and or prior season vaccination will be examined. Children will be followed during the influenza season to identify laboratory-confirmed influenza (i.e. vaccine failure).

The project aims to evaluate the impact of skin routes of immunization (transcutaneous and intradermal vs intramuscular) on cellular and humoral responses to seasonal influenza vaccination in adults (18-45 years old).

In this study, the investigators will prospectively assess fever rates and other adverse events in pregnant women after administration of inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) using text messaging. The investigators hypothesize that women <20 weeks gestational age who receive IIV will be willing to enroll in a text messaging-based vaccine adverse event monitoring program and will use it to report fever in the post-vaccination period as well as continue to text pregnancy-related outcomes through the end of their pregnancy.

Annual study to investigate influenza vaccine (flu vaccine) developed for the 2012/2013 season for the prevention of influenza infection. The immunizing effect is being investigated, as well as its tolerability and safety.

This project is a partnership between Emmi Solutions, a private company that delivers health promotion messages to employees of client organizations, and the University of Michigan and affiliated academic investigators. In particular, Emmi sends out pre-recorded and interactive telephone calls on behalf of their healthcare clients to promote influenza vaccination each Fall. The collaboration will design various scripts (based on established risk communication, behavior change, and behavioral economic principles) to be pre-recorded and sent out on these calls on a randomized basis (with approval by client organizations), with the number of arms to vary based on the size of each client's participant list (to ensure sufficient statistical power within each client's sample). Emmi will deliver the calls and track individual responses to questions posed during the call. Emmi will then provide a de-identified dataset to the academic research team for analysis to determine whether any scripts provided greater or lesser effects to people's their motivations to get a flu vaccination.

In this exploratory study, investigators will be looking at immune response differences between age groups and between the two different influenza vaccines given to identical twins, vaccine-naive young adults and elderly participants.

This study will investigate response to influenza vaccines in monozygotic and dizygotic twins of different ages.

This study will examine the immune responses to the seasonal influenza vaccine in single cells of the nasal passages when compared with cells in circulating blood.

The purpose of the study is to investigate and compare the immune responses to influenza vaccination in monozygotic (identical) and dizygotic (fraternal) twins to determine the roles of genetics and environment in the response to flu vaccination.
