The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Chinese herbal medicines for severe pandemic H1N1 influenza.

Pregnant women have increased morbidity and mortality due to infection with influenza. Changes in T cell function have been proposed as possible mechanisms for this finding. We believe that pregnancy induced changes in NK cell phenotype and function also impact influenza immunity. This study will compare the immune response of pregnant women and controls to TIV influenza vaccination as a surrogate for infection. In this study, the investigators aim to evaluate the effectiveness of seasonal trivalent influenza vaccine, formulation 2013-2014, in patients with different stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD) not on dialysis.

This is a Phase 1,2 randomized, double-blind, multi-center, clinical trial, in participants aged 65 years and older, evaluating the immunogenicity and safety of a water-in-oil emulsion adjuvant (MAS-1 adjuvant, Mercia Pharma, Inc, Scarsdale, NY) combined with each of the three reduced HA antigen dose levels of trivalent influenza virus vaccine compared with licensed, unadjuvanted, standard dose trivalent virus (TIV).
