Response of Older Adults to Influenza Vaccination With Regard to Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Status

The study is being undertaken to evaluate responses to seasonal influenza vaccine in older adults with respect to their CMV status. CMV is cytomegalovirus and is an organism that infects many people, but does not usually cause disease in the individual unless they are immunocompromised i.e. their immune system is not working well such as in the case of HIV infection. CMV is believed to have infected up to 80% of individuals in the age group we will be looking at in our study and we are interested in whether this infection affects their responses to vaccination.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the absolute (versus placebo) and relative (one vaccine compared to the other) efficacies of the live attenuated and inactivated influenza vaccines in preventing laboratory confirmed symptomatic influenza caused by circulating strains whether similar or dissimilar to strains included in the vaccines.

Influenza Immunity Against Pandemic Respiratory Virus

Sixty adults, ages 18-49, will be randomly assigned to receive either FluMist or Fluzone. Some of the subjects will have participated in previous studies for these 2 vaccines. The study will last 4 months with subject participation being 28 days. The purpose of this study is to measure immune response to the vaccinations.

Validation of the Respirio Flu Test for the Rapid Identification of Influenza A/B

The primary purpose of this study is to validate the sensitivity and specificity of the Respirio Flu Test in detecting Influenza A, when used by subjects, as compared to the gold standard for detection, Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR). The secondary aims are to: validate the sensitivity and specificity of the Respirio Flu Test in detecting Influenza B , when used by subjects, as compared to the gold standard for detection, Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR). assess agreement (positive and negative) between Respirio Flu Test and Sofia® Influenza A+B Test in detecting Influenza A; assess agreement (positive and negative) between Respirio Flu Test and Sofia® Influenza A+B Test in detecting Influenza B; evaluate the correct interpretation of the Respirio Flu Test results by subjects with Influenza-like illness symptoms; evaluate the subjects' satisfaction with the convenience, comfort and ease of use of the Respirio Flu Test; evaluate the subjects' comprehension of the Respirio Flu Test labelling; and establish the minimum sample weight required to achieve a result with the Respirio Flu Test.

Adult Influenza Vaccination Text Message Reminders With Electronic Health Record Alerts

Influenza infection leads to on average 3000-49,0000 deaths and 150,000 hospitalizations annually. While vaccination is the cornerstone of preventing influenza infection, vaccination coverage in adults is low. Latino adults have the lowest coverage rates. Text message reminders have been used successfully for improving influenza vaccination for children. This study will assess the use of text messaging to improve influenza vaccination coverage rates in a largely minority, publicly insured adult population. We will also assess if the patient having received a text message makes the patient more likely to accept vaccination when their provider has received in electronic alert regarding need for influenza vaccination in the electronic health record.
