Rapid Evaluation of Pandemic H1N1 Influenza Vaccines in Young Children

Influenza

The purpose of this study is to compare the safety and effectiveness (immune response) to one or two doses of adjuvanted H1N12009 influenza vaccine in young children. An adjuvant is an additive that can boost the immune response. The study will enroll 300 children (ages 6-35 months). Participants will receive 2 doses of adjuvanted H1N12009 vaccine 3 weeks apart. Study procedures include: medical history, blood samples and completing a memory aid. Participants will be involved in study related procedures for approximately 6 weeks.

Rapid Evaluation of Pandemic H1N1 Influenza Vaccine in Aboriginal Children and Adults

H1N1/2009 Influenza

The purpose of this study is to assess the safety and effectiveness (immune response) to a licensed H1N12009 influenza vaccine in aboriginal children and adults. The study will enroll 200 healthy adults (ages 20-59 years) and 75 healthy children (ages 6-35 months). Adults will receive one dose of a licensed H1N1 vaccine and children will receive two doses of a licensed H1N1 vaccine approximately 3 weeks apart. Study procedures include: medical history, blood samples and completing a memory aid. Participants will be involved in study related procedures for approximately 3 weeks (adults) or 6 weeks (children).

Patients treated with chemotherapy or immunosuppressives are at higher risk of influenza infection and mortality and morbidity are higher compared to healthy adults. Vaccination against the influenza virus can prevent these complications. In this study it is investigated whether vaccination during chemotherapy is effective in reaching protective serum antibody concentrations and the relation between time of vaccination (day 4 +/- 1 day versus day 16 +/- 1 day of the chemotherapy cycle).

The purpose of this study is to compare the safety and immunogenicity over a 9-month period of five different dosages of Ad4-H5-Vtn in volunteers (Vaccinees) who receive three doses of the study vaccine or placebo. In addition, transmission of Ad4-H5-Vtn will be evaluated in all Household Contacts residing with the vaccinated volunteers. Vaccinees also may participate in a substudy in which they receive a booster vaccination with the licensed Influenza Virus Vaccine, H5N1 (Sanofi Pasteur).

This present study, randomized, single-blind, dose-ranging, multicenter study, will evaluate immunogenicity, safety and tolerability of two doses of an adjuvanted and not-adjuvanted new swine-origin influenza A/H1N1 virus monovalent subunit vaccine in healthy adult and elderly subjects. A booster dose will be administered 12 months after the first vaccination.
