Enhanced Multicenter Dietary Portfolio Study

Cardiovascular DiseasesType 2 Diabetes1 more

"Is it possible to recruit and retain up to 200 participants in a Randomize Control Trial (RCT) of high impact lifestyle approach of diet and exercise designed to significantly reduce cardiovascular events in middle-aged and older men and women at high risk of such events?" To address this question, we propose a pilot study of 3 years in duration: 1 year recruitment and randomization, a full year of intervention for all recruited participants, and the last 6 months to assess the one year data and prepare and submit the full trial application, informed by the pilot study outcomes in terms of retention rate. The pilot will then continue on for the full 9 years of intervention and be rolled into the main study involving additional Canadian centers and collaborating international centers in the US, Britain, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, India, and South Africa.

Statin Therapy to Improve Medication Adherence

HypercholesterolemiaHMG COA Reductase Inhibitor Adverse Reaction

The purpose of this pilot study is to examine if using genetics can improve statin adherence in patients who should be taking statins but are not because of prior side effects with statins. This study will assist physicians in making a personalized health care plan for prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Replacement of Saturated Fat in Dairy on Total Cholesterol

Hypercholesterolemia

The consumption of milk and dairy products is recognised as an essential part of a healthy diet as it represents an important source of key micro- and macronutrients. Nevertheless, there is still a widespread conviction that the overall high energy density and concentration of long-chain saturated fatty acids (SFA) present in dairy have detrimental health effects, contributing to the progression of cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes. Supplementation of the bovine diet with a source of MUFA, such as rapesee oil, has become an achievable strategy in order to reduce the amount of SFA present in dairy products. The aim of this project is to observe the effects of three types of dairy products (UHT milk, cheese and butter) produced from milk derived from cows fed withhigh-oleic sunflower oil, on CVD risk biomarkers and plasma total cholesterol levels in adults with an increased risk of developing CVD. The aim is to determine whether an isoenergetic exchange of dairy products will affect vascular function and CVD biomarkers.

Intervention With Lupin Protein-enriched Foods in Hypercholesterolemic Subjects

Hypercholesterolemia

The objective of the study is to elucidate the effects of lupin protein (Lupinus angustifolius Boregine) as part of a mixed diet on cardiovascular risk factors and to clarify the role of arginine, one of the most abundant amino acids in lupin protein.

Low Fat Vegan or American Heart Association Diets & Cardiovascular Risk in Obese 9-18 y.o. With...

Cardiovascular DiseaseHypercholesterolemia2 more

The purpose of this study is to investigate the short-term effects of a reduced fat plant-based diet on biomarkers of inflammation, oxidative stress and cardiovascular risk. This plant-based diet consists of whole grains, fruits and vegetables and little amounts of nuts and seeds, with no limitations on the amount of food intake. Animal products are not allowed. The results of the plant-based diet will be compared with the diet recommended by American Heart Association. This diet also emphasizes fruits and vegetables, but allows healthy fats, low-fat meats, fish and low-fat dairy in moderation. The results of the study might be useful in understanding whether or not plant-based diets are protective against cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular Health Promotion Among African-Americans by FAITH!

Cardiovascular DiseasesPrevention8 more

Given the importance of healthy lifestyle practices to cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention and the utility of church-based interventions in African-American adults, the investigators developed a theory-informed, strategically-planned, health and wellness intervention with Rochester, Minnesota (MN) and Twin Cities area (Minneapolis, St. Paul, MN) churches with predominately African-American congregations. The objective of the study was to partner with churches to implement a multi-component, health education program through the use of core educational sessions delivered through a digital-application accessible on demand via interactive access on computer tablets and the Internet. The overarching goal was to increase the awareness and critical importance of healthy lifestyles for CVD prevention and provide support for behavior change.

Evolocumab In Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease Trial

Chronic Kidney DiseasesHigh Cholesterol

110 individuals with stage 4-5 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) will be randomized to 1-year of blinded Evolocumab or placebo. Subjects will undergo evaluation of circulating lipids at baseline and end of study. A substudy including 50 subjects will assess myocardial rest and stress positron emission tomography (PET) at baseline and at 1-year.

Oil Consumption and Cholesterol

Hypercholesterolemia

More than 31 million U.S. adults have high total cholesterol and over 73 million U.S. adults have high LDL cholesterol. Cottonseed oil (CSO) is found readily in our food supply, and recent research has shown improvements in blood lipids following CSO consumption in healthy adults with normal cholesterol profiles. To date, however, there are no published studies on the effects of CSO-enriched diets on blood lipids and markers of health in an older population with hypercholesterolemia. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to test the health effects of a diet rich in CSO against a diet rich in olive oil to determine if the CSO-enriched diet will show greater improvements in blood lipids and other health markers in adults with high cholesterol levels. If CSO in the diet is found to improve these markers, these study findings could lead to improvements in health.

Evaluating the Efficacy of Pediatric Lipid Screening Alerts

HypercholesterolemiaHypercholesterolemia3 more

The purpose of the study is to evaluate prospectively the impact of different system alerts on the prescription of lipid panels to pediatric Geisinger patients (9-11 years old), as per the now-universal guidelines. This will help quantify the relative effectiveness of different alerts and combinations of alerts on provider prescribing behavior and patient uptake of screening.
