Safety of Red Yeast Rice for High Cholesterol in Individuals With Statin Intolerance

HypercholesterolemiaStatin-Associated Myopathy

This study will examine the effect of red yeast rice extract compared to pravastatin on muscle related complaints in individuals with high cholesterol who have previously been unable to tolerate statin medications due to muscle pain. The study will determine whether red yeast is associated with a lower level of muscle related complaints compared to pravastatin.

Ezetimibe Reverse Cholesterol Transport (RCT) Pilot Study

Hypercholesterolemia

This is a prospective, placebo-controlled, cross-over trial comparing the the effects of approximately 7 weeks of placebo treatment to 7 weeks of ezetimibe (10mg/day) treatment on several parameters of reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) in men and post-menopausal women diagnosed with hypercholesterolemia. The primary hypothesis is that the ezetimibe treatment will increase the excretion of endogenous (plasma-derived) cholesterol as fecal sterols, with secondary hypotheses that there will be a significant increase in de novo cholesterol synthesis, treatment will increase cholesterol efflux from tissues into the bloodstream, and increase global RCT.

Hypercholesterolemia

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential effects of ER niacin/laropiprant, ER niacin, laropiprant, and placebo over the course of seven days on urinary levels of a metabolite of thromboxane A2 (TxA2), as a marker of in vivo platelet reactivity.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Lovaza) for Second Generation Antipsychotic-Associated Hypertriglyceridemia...

High TriglyceridesHypercholesterolemia3 more

This is an open-label pilot study of omega-3 fatty acids (Lovaza) for hypertriglyceridemia in subjects who have been on an atypical (second-generation) antipsychotic medication. The investigators hypotheses are that patients who receive Lovaza will experience a significant decrease in triglycerides from baseline. Secondary hypotheses include: Patients will experience a significant decrease in total cholesterol, and Lovaza will be well tolerated.

Effectiveness and Safety of Ezetimibe Added to Atorvastatin in Patients With High Cholesterol and...

HypercholesterolemiaCoronary Heart Disease

This is a multicenter, randomized, parallel group, placebo controlled study designed to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of ezetimibe added to ongoing atorvastatin therapy compared with ongoing atorvastatin treatment alone. This study will involve subjects with primary hypercholesterolemia and coronary heart disease (CHD) who are currently being treated with atorvastatin and who would benefit from additional reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).
