Bread Replacement - Facing the Challenge to Improve Its Quality for Better Metabolic Health

This is a multicenter study testing the effect of bread containing beta-glucan on glycemic control in participants with intermediate hyperglycemia. The main hypothesis of the study is that bread enriched with beta-glucan will have a positive effect on blood glucose control (HbA1c) in persons with intermediate hyperglycemia. Bread (intervention and control) will be produced by Nofima (Ås, Norway) using food-grade beta-glucan from oat and barley and shipped to the study centers (Bergen (N), Gothenburg (S), Paderborn, and Leipzig (D)) and there distributed for free to the participants of the study. The study will last for 16 weeks with measurements at baseline, after 8 weeks and after 16 weeks. Blood and urine samples will be taken, anthropometry and body composition measured, and questionnaires on health status and socio-economic status, physical activity, nicotine use, alcohol habits, chronotype, quality of life, and consumer acceptance of the study bread will be filled in.

The goal of this clinical trial is to test whether one minute of stair stepping at a comfortable pace can reduce blood sugar after meals. The main objectives of the study are: Compare continuously measured post-meal glucose after stair-stepping to control condition Compare continuously measured post-meal glucose after stair-stepping between meals Assess interaction between condition and meal to determine if the effect of stair-stepping on post-meal glucose depends on meal Participants will be in the study for 10 days and will be asked to: Wear a continuous glucose monitor over the course of the study Perform either one minute of comfortable pace stair stepping 15 min after each meal OR no exercise 1 hour after eating a meal on alternating days Perform a dietary recall every two days Perform no exercise within one hour after each meal on any day during the study Consume no calories within one hour after each meal during the study

There are numerous plant foods that are a source of bioactive compounds, which can induce an anti-inflammatory effect on various pathways of inflammatory processes in the body as it may be useful in decreasing markers of inflammation expressed by COVID-19 infectious disease and conditions such as obesity and its comorbidities. Given the above, Hibiscus sabdariffa hibiscus possesses advantages as a potential adjuvant in the management of COVID-19, as studies on the phytochemical properties of H. sabdariffa show that it has several health benefits, and could be used as a potent material for the therapeutic treatment of various diseases. Due to its high content of bioactive compounds, these can exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic effects, as well as help control blood glucose levels, prevent cardiovascular disease and obesity. In addition, it is a traditional component of the Mexican diet, of common consumption, easy incorporation in the diet, versatility in preparation and national production. Therefore, to evaluate the bioavailability of bioactive compounds present in a beverage developed from the TECNM/ITESO collaboration, as well as the glycemic and insulinemic response produced by its consumption; besides establishing the effect on some inflammation markers that may be activated as a consequence of the SARS-COV-2 virus infection. This will help to increase knowledge about potential treatment/prevention schemes, avoid the development of severe manifestations of the disease, as well as boost the production and market of a national product.

The Westlake Precision Birth Cohort (WeBirth) is a prospective cohort study among women with hyperglycemia during pregnancy and their offspring living in Hangzhou, China. The primary aim of this cohort is to characterize the continuous blood glucose response to dietary intake and physical activity among pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) over 2 weeks, and to facilitate the development of personalized nutritional/lifestyle recommendation among these patients. Another aim of WeBirth is to investigate the association of dietary intake and physical activity together with continuous glucose change during pregnancy on the adverse birth outcomes including preterm birth, macrosomia and large-for-gestational-age birth. The secondary aim is to investigate the prospective associations of diet, physical activity and continuous glucose change over 2 weeks among the participants with long-term metabolic health of these women and their offspring.

The goal of this clinical trial is to investigate the effect of lysine and phosphorous on the glycemic index (GI) of white bread and postprandial glycemia. The main questions it aims to answer are: Can double fortification with lysine and phosphorous lower the glycemic index (GI) of bread? Does double fortification with lysine and phosphorous improve postprandial glycemia? Participants in the study will be assigned to the control group, where they will consume regular white bread, then to the experimental group, where they will consume double fortified bread with lysine and phosphorous. The glycemic response of the bread samples will be measured by monitoring blood glucose levels in healthy participants after consuming the bread. The glycemic index will also be calculated based on the area under the curve (AUC) of the test food compared to a standard. The collected data will be analyzed using statistical methods such as paired sample t-tests and one-way ANOVA. The expected outcomes of the study are that lysine and phosphorous will reduce the glycemic index of white bread and also decrease the postprandial blood glucose spike. This research aims to provide valuable insights into fortifying bread to improve its health impact, particularly for individuals with diabetes or at risk of developing diabetes

Hyperglycemia is seen in approximately 30% of patients who do not have a history of diabetes and undergo general surgery. Hyperglycemia in this setting is associated with increased risk of postoperative complications. The purpose of this study is to investigate risk factors for developing high sugars during the time of surgery, and if these high sugars can be prevented by the use of an injectable diabetes medication (dulaglutide) prior to surgery.
