Habitual Diet and Avocado Trial
Intra-abdominal FatMetabolic Syndrome13 moreThe Habitual Diet and Avocado Trial will evaluate the effects of providing one avocado per day for recommended consumption over a 6 month period in a cohort of approximately 1000 free-living participants with increased waist circumference in comparison with a control group that will maintain their habitual diets. Participants will be recruited and screened at 4 clinics in 4 locations: Pennsylvania State University; Loma Linda University; UCLA, and Tufts University (250 per site).
Culturally-Adapted Diet for Puerto Rican Adults
Diabetes MellitusType 26 moreThis pilot project will determine whether a diet culturally-adapted to Puerto Ricans can effectively decrease cardiometabolic risk for diabetes. This will help define a culturally-appropriate, feasible, and sustainable diet intervention aimed at reducing type 2 diabetes and obesity outcomes.
Effect of Baobab Fruit on Postprandial Glycaemia in Healthy Adults
HyperglycemiaPostprandialBaobab fruits have been traditionally used in Africa due to its therapeutic proprieties attributed to it high polyphenol content. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of baobab fruit on postprandial glycaemia on healthy adults and to measure its bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity. The study was conducted on 31 healthy subjects. The participants were randomly allocated in control group (oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT); n = 16) and in intervention group (OGTT followed by administration of 250 ml baobab aqueous extract (BAE); n = 15). Total phenols, proanthocyanidins, hydrolysable tannins and antioxidant activity (FRAP, DPPH, ABTS and inhibition of O2•- and NO• methods) were quantified. Repeated Measures ANOVA of mixed type and Independent samples t-test were used.
Metabolic Effects of High-amylose Wheat-based Rusks.
HyperglycemiaAmylose-amylopectin ratio may influence the rate of starch digestion. This randomized controlled study evaluated the postprandial metabolic effects of amylose-rich- wheat- based rusks in overweight subjects.
Effect of Salba & Flax on Postprandial Glycemia and Subjective Satiety
HyperglycemiaPostprandialThe purpose of this study is to determine whether drinks containing Salvia hispanica L (Salba) or Flax lower postprandial blood glucose levels and improve appetite in healthy individuals.
Remifentanil and Glycemic Response in Cardiac Surgery
Heart DiseasesHyperglycemiaThis study evaluates the effect of using remifentanil during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery to supress the hyperglycemic response in perioperative period. Half of the participants will receive continuous intravenous remifentanil during surgery, while the other half will receive intermittent intravenous fentanyl during surgery. Intermittent intravenous fentanyl administration is this institution's standard of care.
Effect of the Omentectomy on the Hyperglycemia and the Resistance to the Insulin in Patients With...
ObesityDiabetes Mellitus Type 2To determine if the omentectomy diminishes hyperglycemia and improves the resistance to the insulin in patients with morbid obesity and propensity to develop to Diabetes Mellitus type 2.
Exendin(9-39)Amide as a Glucagon-like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) Receptor Antagonist in Humans
HyperglycemiaThe purpose of this study is to determine the dose of the GLP-1 receptor antagonist exendin(9-39) which blocks the insulinotropic action of synthetic GLP-1 by at least 95%.
NAET® Testing Devices in Detection of Hypersensitivity to Cane Sugar
AllergyFatigue3 moreBackground: Studies have noted a correlation between food sensitivities and health disorders. Various commonly seen health problems may be caused by cane sugar since it is lavishly and frequently used by people worldwide. Objective: This study evaluated the efficacy of NAET testing instruments in detecting hypersensitivities to cane sugar. Materials and Methods: Seventy-four subjects volunteered for this study. They were asked to write down one of their major health problems, the amount of sugar consumed on a daily basis and any known health problem(s) related to sugar consumption. The following testing modalities were used in the study: (1). Allergy Symptom-Rating Scale (ASRS); (2). NST Rating Scale (NSTRS); (3). Pulse Difference Rating Scale (PDRS). Test-1 was done twice. Tests 2 and 3 were done three times each: once without contacting sugar and then contacting sugar at one minute and ten minutes.
