Genetic Predictors of Variability in the Drug-drug Interaction Between Darunavir/Ritonavir and Pravastatin...

HIV InfectionsHyperlipidemia

Pravastatin (Pravachol) is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is used to treat high cholesterol. Darunavir (Prezista) and ritonavir (Norvir) are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat HIV infection. When darunavir and ritonavir are given with pravastatin, they can increase the blood levels of pravastatin. The degree of this interaction varies from person to person. The way that darunavir and ritonavir interact with pravastatin may be affected by a person's genetic make-up. Genetic factors (or DNA) are those that people are born with and that make each person unique. Genetic differences are the reason why one person's body traits such as height and hair color are different from another person's body traits. Genetic differences can also affect the way a medication works in the body or the way two medications interact in the body. The purpose of this clinical study is to determine if a person's genetic make-up affects the way darunavir and ritonavir interact with pravastatin in the body.

Efficacy and Safety of Morning Versus Evening Intake of Simvast Controlled Release (CR) Tablet in...

Hyperlipidemia

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of morning versus evening intake of Simvastatin Controlled Release tablet 20mg for 8 weeks in patients with hyperlipidemia. This study will investigate equivalence of the low-density lipoprotein(LDL) cholesterol percent change.

Prospective Evaluation of Proteinuria and Renal Function in Non-diabetic Patients With Progressive...

Hyperlipidemia

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Crestor (rosuvastatin) and (Lipitor) atorvastatin on urinary protein excretion over 1 year in non-diabetes with moderate proteinuria and hypercholesterolaemia.

Effects of L-Carnitine on Postprandial Clearance of Triglyceride-rich Lipoproteins in HIV Patients...

HyperlipidemiaHIV Infections

Included in this study will be patients with HIV and being treated with highly active antiretroviral medications (HAART) including protease inhibitors (PI) or non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI). Protease inhibitors and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors are very common medications in HIV treatment and are usually given with other medications as part of a standard treatment for HIV (HAART). We hope to learn more about how the levels of cholesterol-and triglyceride-carrying particles (lipoproteins) are affected by a nutritional supplement, L-Carnitine, in HIV-positive patients treated with antiretroviral medications.

Comparison of the Combination of Fenofibrate and Simvastatin Versus Atorvastatin

Hyperlipidemia

Mixed or combined hyperlipidemia is a common metabolic disorder characterized by both hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia. Statins and fibrates have complementary mechanisms and can be coadministered to patients with mixed hyperlipidemia. The overall objective of the study is to compare the efficacy and safety of combining fenofibrate and simvastatin versus atorvastatin monotherapy in patients with mixed hyperlipidemia at risk of cardiovascular diseases.

The Effect of Strawberries in a Cholesterol-Lowering Dietary Portfolio

HyperlipidemiaCardiovascular Diseases1 more

The purpose of this study is to determine whether addition of strawberries to a dietary portfolio of cholesterol-lowering foods will improve compliance and so increase the effectiveness of the dietary portfolio in lowering cholesterol and improving cardiovascular risk factors.
