Effects of Glucose Lowering Agents in South Asian Women With Impaired Glucose Tolerance or Impaired...

Impaired Glucose ToleranceInsulin Sensitivity1 more

This study will test the effect of four common oral anti-diabetic agents on hepatic insulin sensitivity in South Asian women with impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose. In a 12-week, double-blind, randomized controlled intervention trial, the following drugs will be tested head-to-head: Metformin, Pioglitazone, Empagliflozin and Linagliptin. Additional, exploratory outcomes include whole body insulin sensitivity, insulin secretion and other markers of glucose and lipid metabolism, measured by the euglycemic clamp with stable isotope tracer dilution, indirect calorimetry and CT-measurements of abdominal adipose tissue compartment volumes and hepatic and pancreatic volume and attenuation. The study is part of the DIASA - DIAbetes in South Asians - Research Programme, which aims to find ways to improve both prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes in people of South Asian ethnicity.

Evaluation of Potential Allergenicity of New Soybean Varieties

Soy Allergy

Food allergy is on the rise within the pediatric population. Having a food allergy can cause medical, nutritional and psychological issues in those who suffer with it. Although making the appropriate diagnosis of food allergy is very important, properly diagnosing food allergy has been a challenge. Skin prick testing and food-specific immunoglobulin-e (IgE) testing of the blood can give positive results that are false. Currently, Oral Food Challenges are the best way to diagnose a food allergy. Unfortunately, Oral Food Challenges are time consuming and may not be readily available to suspected food allergy sufferers. This study is designed to examine the effectiveness of an allergy-detecting blood test called ImmunoCAP manufactured by the company, ThermoFisher. Soybean is one of the eight allergy-inducing foods that are responsible for 90% of all food allergies. A part of the study is to allow the study Sponsor to use some of the blood sample collected from you to test if genetically-changed soy has more or less allergy producing factors. This is important to the Sponsor to test the safety of their genetically modified soy.

Effect of Anakinra on Insulin Sensitivity in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes Mellitus

The purpose of this study is to test whether anakinra is able to reduce insulin resistance. This will be tested in overweighted type I diabetes mellitus patients, which have no residual beta-cell function. By using this patient group, all positive effects on glycemic control should be the consequence of improved insulin sensitivity.

Study of Carfilzomib With Irinotecan in Irinotecan-Sensitive Malignancies and Small Cell Lung Cancer...

Small Cell Lung CarcinomaNon Small Cell Lung Carcinoma1 more

The purpose of this study is to determine a well-tolerated dose of Carfilzomib in combination with Irinotecan (Phase 1b portion of the study) in subjects with relapsed small and non-small cell lung cancer or other irinotecan-sensitive cancers and to assess the 6 month survival of relapsed small cell lung cancer patients treated with this combination therapy. **The Phase 1b portion of the study is now complete**. Phase 2 portion of the study. The safest, maximally tolerated dose established as established in Phase 1 for Phase 2 is as follows -- Carfilzomib will be provided at 20/36 mg/m2 with Irinotecan dosed at 125 mg/m2. The purpose of the Phase 2 portion of the study is to assess 6 month survival of relapsed small cell lung cancer ins subjects treated with this combination therapy.

Thyroxin Treatment in Sub Clinical Hypothyroidism, on the Apnea Hypopnea Index Score, Lipids and...

Dyslipidemia

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and hypothyroidism are both commonly found in clinical practice, and share a number of symptoms and clinical features. It has been shown that hypothyroid subjects are at high risk of developing sleep disorder breathing and OSA, and adequate thyroxine treatment may reduce the sleep disordered breathing.. However, the time-course and effect of treating subclinical hypothyroidism in OSA patients on the respiratory events during sleep is not known. Subclinical hypothyroidism is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Dyslipidemia is a known complications of subclinical hypothyroidism and the effect of thyroxine treatment on lipid profile is controversial . Some reports suggested higher serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), than healthy subjects; however, the effect of levothyroxine is controversial. This project will help us to know if the treatment of subclinical hypothyroidism will improve the symptoms and reduce the progression of OSA, which may improve patients' quality of life by reducing the complication of OSA (hypertension, , depression, Cardiovascular diseases, etc.) or may even reduce mortality. It will help us to know the effect of subclinical hypothyroidism treatment on of lipid profiles and hs-CRP.
