A Randomized, Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Peanut Sublingual Immunotherapy Trial

Food HypersensitivityHypersensitivity2 more

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and immune response to daily sublingual (under the tongue) immunotherapy (SLIT) with peanut extract in adults and children with peanut allergies.

Assessment of Residual Allergenicity of Tree (Birch, Hazel, and Alder) Pollen Allergoid Using Skin...

Type I Hypersensitivity

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the residual allergenicity of Tree MATA (modified pollen allergen tyrosine adsorbate) by skin prick testing. This is done by a comparison of the wheal response after skin prick testing with aqueous native and modified allergen, modified tyrosine adsorbed allergen and Tree MATA MPL (modified tyrosine adsorbed + MPL [Monophosphoryl Lipid A]).

Food Allergy in the Brain

Food AllergyFood Allergy in Children2 more

Preventing food allergic reactions predominantly relies on allergen avoidance and managing this daily causes high anxiety in some patients, while having an allergic reaction can cause a post-traumatic stress disorder-like syndrome in children. The underlying mechanisms of these psychological changes are poorly understood, but one potential mechanism may be post-natal hippocampal neurogenesis (HN). HN is the production of new neurons from stem cells in the hippocampus which is one of the brain centres for memory and mood regulation. HN has been associated with cognitive function and some psychiatric disorders. Importantly, it can be influenced by both internal (bloodstream) and external (exercise, diet, etc.) factors. This study will explore the link between food allergy and children's mental health and cognition, and to determine whether this is linked to changes in HN.

Study of Indoor Air Pollutants and Their Impact in Childhood Health and Wellbeing

Asthma in ChildrenAllergy

The number and types of indoor air pollutants in schools is rising, however little is known about the impact of their potentially synergistic interactions, upon schoolchildren health. Among children, highly susceptible individuals to air pollution include allergy and asthma sufferers, and a low socioeconomic background, however no specific guidance is available. The Syn-Air-G project will develop a comprehensive and responsive multipollutant monitoring system (in accessible and actionable formats) by constructing and deploying novel but validated and improved sensors of chemical and biological (allergens, microbes) pollutants) and advancing environmentally friendly interventions (including air purifiers). Health: A comprehensive multidisciplinary and exposome approach of health effects of multi-pollution in small children.

Nutritional Supplementation and Insulin Sensitivity

Nitric OxideInsulin Sensitivity3 more

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a progressive disease and early intervention and prevention strategies are therefore very important. An important early hallmark in the development of T2DM is insulin resistance. Since the majority of postprandial glucose disposal occurs in skeletal muscle, improving muscle insulin sensitivity will thus have a major impact on disease prevention. Abdominally obese men and women have an increased risk to develop T2DM, and are also characterized by an impaired vascular function. This may hamper proper delivery of insulin, glucose and oxygen to muscles, thereby contributing to - and possibly causing - muscle insulin resistance. Earlier it has been shown that supplementation with L- arginine improves vascular function by improving nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. These NO- mediated beneficial effects on vascular function may improve delivery of insulin, glucose and oxygen to the muscle tissue, thereby improving muscle insulin sensitivity and mitochondrial function. However, the doses needed of this amino acid cannot be provided by regular diets or supplements, also due to the bitter taste of L-arginine. Alternatively, smaller amounts of L- arginine with a specific combination of other nutritional components (i.e. nitrate and nitrite), which are already part of the regular diet and support alternative pathways to improve NO- mediated vascular function, may also induce beneficial effects. The investigators now hypothesize that in abdominally obese adults with impaired fasting glucose concentrations L-arginine combined with nitrate/nitrite increases muscle insulin sensitivity.

Comparison of Dentin Hypersensitivity Reduction Over a 1-month Period

Dentin Sensitivity

Here we assessed the clinical effectiveness of Gluma, fluoride varnish, and the Tetric N-Bond one-step self-etch system in alleviating DH instantly and over 1 month, after a single topical application.A randomized, double-blind, clinical trial was conducted on 55 patients (25 males, 30 females; age: 20-49 years). Seventy teeth were randomly assigned to three groups: Gluma (n = 24); fluoride varnish (n = 23); and Tetric N-Bond adhesive (n = 23). Sensitivity to tactile, air blast, and cold stimuli were investigated.. A visual analogue scale was used to assess tactile stimuli, and the Schiff Cold Scale to assess air blast and cold stimuli. DH was evaluated immediately post-treatment, and at the 2-week and 1-month follow-up. Between-group and within-group comparisons were made.

Efficacy of Fluoride Varnish Containing Xylitol Coated Calcium Phosphate Versus Conventional Fluoride...

Hypersensitivity

This clinical trial will be conducted to compare the efficacy of fluoride varnish containing xylitol coated calcium and phosphate or potassium nitrate gel versus conventional fluoride varnish in the management of hypersensitivity of non-carious exposed root surfaces in adult patients over a 12 months period.

A Comparison of Long-Term Effectiveness of Two Desensitizing Products

Dentin Hypersensitivity

This randomized, controlled, clinical trial aimed to compare the 6- month clinical performance of a desensitizer that contains calcium phosphate TM with a two-step self-etch adhesive SE and placebo (distilled water). At least 150 teeth wil be treated with desensitizing products and placebo randomly one third usig TM, one third using SE and one third using placebo. The efficiency of the materials will be evaluated at baseline, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after treatment.
