Physiotherapy in the Treatment of Breastfeeding Difficulties
BreastfeedingAnkyloglossia1 moreThe objective of this randomized, single-blind clinical trial is to compare the efficacy of two treatments (Myofunctional Therapy and breastfeeding sessions) in infants who have difficulty breastfeeding during the first week of life. The main questions to be answered are: Is breastfeeding improved with this type of intervention? What type of intervention is better? After carrying out these interventions, does the baby need to undergo surgery if it presents a sublingual frenulum? Participants must be infants who are one week old and who have been diagnosed with ankyloglossia through the Hazelbaker Scale. They will be randomly distributed into the two intervention groups and after one month of treatment, they will be assessed again using the same scale. The researchers will compare the results between these two groups in order to verify the best intervention.
Use of Ritual Epost Postnatal Multivitamins During the Postpartum Period
Lactation Disorder - Postpartum Condition or ComplicationNutrition1 moreMultivitamin/multimineral supplements (MVI) provide important nutrition supplement to the diet of pregnant women to cover potential deficiencies and optimize nutrition status of both mom and baby, especially when the diet is suboptimal or nutrient demand is high while absorption is hindered by various factors such as genetic variance and gastrointestinal function. It is, however, largely unknown whether using an MVI during the lactating period helps improve nutrition status of mom and baby. In this double-blind, randomized, controlled trial, the investigators will recruit 7- postpartum women who exclusively breastfeed at week 5 postpartum and randomly assign them to either receive the Ritual MVI which is commercially available or a blank placebo for 10 weeks. A blank placebo is appropriate because there is currently no recommendation or scientific consensus that lactating women who are healthy and eat a normal diet would have improved nutrition status or maternal-infant health outcomes from a nutrition supplement. The investigators will collect blood and breastmilk samples at baseline and end of the study to assess nutrient status. The investigators hypothesize that consumption of a Ritual MVI leads to better nutrition status and biomarkers in maternal-child dyads compared to control.
Macronutrients in Lactating NICU Parents - Impact of Kangaroo Care
Lactation Disorder With Baby DeliveredNutrition Disorder1 moreThe goal of this clinical trial is to learn about the impact of Kangaroo Care (holding your baby skin-to-skin on your chest) in lactating parents with babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) that cannot directly breastfeed.
Effectiveness of Press Tack Needle Acupuncture in Treating Lactation Insufficiency
Lactation; InsufficientPartial2 moreThis study was meant to see the effectiveness of press tack needle acupuncture in improving lactation insufficiency. The acupuncture points used in this study were CV17 Danzhong and SI1 Shaoze. Press Tack Needles were placed in these acupuncture points for 7 days in hope that it will give continuous acupuncture stimulation that might help in improving lactation insufficiency with minimal side effect, less time consuming, and more efficient for the patient.
Effect of Acupuncture on Hypogalactia
HypogalactiaThe specific aims are (1) to assess the feasibility of a RCT studying acupuncture's impact on breast milk production, and (2) to compare the difference of milk production between acupuncture and power pumping. The study approach will be a two-site prospective, non-blinded, two-arm randomized clinical trial conducted in Lubbock and Amarillo as a collaborative effort between researchers and clinicians in the departments of Family Medicine, Pediatrics and Ob/Gyn. An estimated 60 eligible mothers will be recruited and enrolled in the study from both sites. The participants will be randomized 1:1 into either the intervention group or the comparison group. The intervention group will receive three standardized acupuncture sessions, based on previous studies done in China and investigators' practice protocol, in 5 days and the comparison group will perform power pumping in 5 days per provided manual and guidance. The primary outcome is changes of breast milk production and it will be measured by weighing the grams/volume of milk expressed with an electric breast pump over time. The secondary outcome is changes of plasma prolactin and it will be measured by immunoassay. Data will be collected at baseline, right after interventions and two week after interventions to compare the difference of the outcomes. The findings of this study will provide insight to establish a RCT protocol to assess acupuncture's impact on hypogalactia. It may also help establish evidence of acupuncture use for hypogalactia.
Efficacy of Herbal Galactagogue Silitidil After Preterm Birth
Breast Milk ProductionHuman Milk Feeding2 moreAfter preterm birth mothers often suffer from hypogalactia. Herbal galactogogues can be used in order to increase milk production. In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial the effect of Silitidil, an extract from milk thistle, on the postpartal milk production in mothers of very premature newborns is investigated.
Influence of Kinesiology Taping Application on Severity of Signs and Symptoms in Breast Engorgement....
Lactation DisordersThe aim of the research is to asses the efficacy of kinesiology taping application in breast engorgement in early postpartum stage. Kinesiology application will be performed by women's health physiotherapist. Patient's perceived improvement and milk outflow following application will be assessed.
