During surgery, a fine needle puncture was proceeded when suspicious nodes was found by clinician. Repeat the punction for 2-3 times from different orientation and then, Diff-quik staining or PTH immunochromatographic assay were proceeded for lymph node or parathyroid glands identification. Post-operative pathology outcome was considered as golden standard.

OBJECTIVES: I. Identify latent hypoparathyroidism in normocalcemic adult survivors with repaired conotruncal cardiac defects, by evaluating parathyroid gland secretory function after induced hypocalcemia. II. Determine the relationship of parathyroid hormone secretion to microdeletions in the same region of chromosome 22q11 as found in patients with DiGeorge anomaly.

Hypoparathyroidism (hypoPT) and pseudohypoparathyroidism (Ps-hypoPT) are rare diseases, characterized by low levels of parathyroid hormone [PTH] and plasma calcium or high plasma PTH and low plasma calcium, respectively. A recently study by the investigators' group, identified 123 living persons with idiopathic hypoPT and 62 living persons with Ps-hypoPT, only few of these have been genetic tested. The aim of the study is to perform a detailed clinical and genetic characterization of Danish patients with idiopathic hypoPT and Ps-hypoPT. Patients will be examined by questionnaires, biochemistry, scans, bone biopsies and genetic tests. Furthermore the investigators aim to perform family tracing for the hereditary forms. The prevalence of magnesium depletion will be assessed as well. In addition to providing new information on symptoms, co-morbidity, and prognosis for this group of patients, the investigators presume that the study may improve their understanding on calcium homeostasis and bone metabolism in general.

In the present study, the severity of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury (RLNI) and hypocalcemia (H) will be followed-up and the probable interrelation between them will be proposed considering the clinical situation of patients, e.g. improvement in hypocalcemia also make a positive effect on voice? (any objective sign? Ca? PTH?), return of voice is parallel with the improvement in hypocalcemia? Postoperative calcium (Ca), parathyroid hormone (PTH), regular vocal cord evaluations by ear-nose-throat (ENT) exams, deterioration-stability-improvement of clinical symptoms regarding both Ca metabolism and vocal cord function will be noted at regular intervals (postoperative day 1-3-first, weekly control/first month, monthly/first 6-month, 3-monthly/6-12 months) at outpatient controls. Serum Ca, PTH, ENT evaluation of vocal cords-noted.

Hypocalcemia is one of the most frequent complications of total thyroidectomy, a procedure used for benign as well as malignant conditions of the thyroid gland. Postoperative hypocalcemia is usually caused by hypoparathyroidism. Vitamin D is implicated in calcium metabolism as it increases intestinal calcium transport and regulates parathormone production. Aim of the present study is to evaluate preoperative vitamin D levels as a prognostic factor for postoperative hypocalcemia and hypoparathyroidism.

Pediatric hypoparathyroidism is an orphan disease. Conventional management combines native and active vitamin D, calcium supplementation and sometimes phosphate binders, with the risk of long term hypercalciuria, nephrocalcinosis and further renal impairment. The use of teriparatide has been reported in adults (daily or bi-daily subcutaneous infusions) and in children (rather continuous subcutaneous infusion) as second-line therapy. The objective of this study is to obtain efficacy and safety data on the use of teriparatide in children with hypoparathyroidism to improve our knowledge of their management.

Quality of life study. The study with include all patients operated with total thyroidectomy between 2005-2015 in Uppsala-Örebro healthcare region, Sweden. The study population has been identified in a previous study and includes close to 1700 patients, of which about 200 developed permanent hypoparathyroidism after surgery. Quality of Life will be assessed using SF-36 Health Surgery and the outcome for patients with and without permanent hypoparathyroidism will be compared.
