Dry Mouth

The objective of this study is to evaluate dry mouth relief in subjects with self-reported feeling of dry mouth after using an experimental mouth rinse or a positive control compared to a water control.

Effects of Photobiomodulation in Salivary Analysis of Chronic Renal Failure Patients

XerostomiaChronic Renal Failure

End-stage renal disease patients undergoing hemodialysis can present alteration in flow, concentrations and composition of saliva affecting oral health. This randomized placebo-controlled trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) in salivary parameters in chronic renal failure (CRF) patients undergoing hemodialysis. Forty-four patients with CRF on hemodialysis self-responded two questionnaires for oral health and salivary gland function perception. Thereafter, patients were clinically evaluated for the diagnosis of hypofunction of salivary glands and were randomly allocated into two groups: PBM group (n = 21), which received three irradiations of laser at ʎ = 808 nm, 100 mW, 142 J/cm2 and 4 J per point; and a placebo group (n = 17) that consisted of laser protocol with the device switched off. Patients were first submitted to sialometry and after to PBM or placebo intervention at baseline, 7 and 14 days. Non-stimulated and stimulated saliva were collected for salivary volume investigation and biochemical analysis of total protein, calcium and urea concentrations.

The Management of RT-induced Hyposalivation Using LLLT

Head and Neck Cancer

The primary purpose is to evaluate the effectiveness of photobiomodulation laser application in the management of patients with radiotherapy-induced hyposalivation. Secondary, to assess the changes in the scores of the patient's oral health-related quality of life using validated measurements.

Effectiveness of Thyme Honey in Management of Xerostomia in ESRD

Xerostomia

The oral health of older people has warranted considerable research attention in the last two to three decades. One of the most oral conditions that have been related to the elderly patients was xerostomia. An elderly population that has a high rate of comorbid disease is likely to continue for the foreseeable future. Among these pathologies, End stage renal disease (ESRD) stands out as a common serious age-related disease. ESRD is a chronic irreversible renal failure. It is known also as chronic kidney disease (CKD) Stage 6 or CKD 6. Xerostomia is relatively common in patients having ESRD with prevalence ranging from 28% to 67%. Multiple pharmacological and non-pharmacological measures that have been tested in previous studies in order to improve xerostomia in patients with ESRD which were based on the stimulation of the salivary gland flow. A new alternative for the control of xerostomia is the use of thyme honey, which is a propolis gel product with strong antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal and immunomodulation effect. It is believed that the presence of honey in the oral cavity has a sialagogue effect, stimulating the salivary glands to produce more saliva, due to the high sugar concentration in honey. The purpose of the study is to determine whether the use of thyme honey as mouth rinse will help in the treatment of xerostomia in geriatric patients with end-stage renal disease (symptom management).

Mesenchymal Stemcells for Radiation Induced Xerostomia

Xerostomia

The current study aims to assess the safety and feasibility of the injection of autologous adipost tissue derived MSCs on radiation-induced salivary gland hypofunction and xerostomia in head and neck cancer participants. The project can potentially help to develop a clinically relevant treatment option for the growing number of patients suffering from xerostomia after radiotherapy. The development of new therapies is especially important, since only sub-optimal symptomatic treatments are currently available and the symptom of xerostomia greatly reduces the quality of life.

Potential of an Experimental Mouthwash Formulation to Reduce Dry Mouth Symptoms

Xerostomia

This will be a single center, 7-day, examiner blind, two treatment-arm, randomized, stratified (Sjogren's Syndrome status [Y/N]), parallel group study conducted in participants experiencing dry mouth symptoms. This study is designed to investigate the effect of an experimental mouthwash formulation in providing relief of dry mouth symptoms.

XerostomiaHyposalivation2 more

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical efficacy, safety and acceptability of our new oral salivary equivalent in the relief of signs and symptoms related to mouth dryness as compared to two distinct moisturizing currently marketed oral sprays (Aequasyal® & Biotene®) in patients with xerostomia due to chronic hyposalivation.

Evaluation of an Electro-stimulator for the Treatment of Xerostomia

Xerostomia

This is a multinational trial, aimed at testing the safety and performance of a electrostimulating device ("GenNarino") to treat dry mouth, over one year. The design is as follows: Multi-center, double blind, sham (placebo) controlled, about 10 xerostomia patients per center Patients receive a GenNarino (and its remote control) that is programmed for one month sham and one month active mode (the order of which is randomly assigned), and thereafter 9 months at the active mode (divided in period of 3 months, the order of each is randomly assigned at wearing GenNarino for 1, 5 or 10 minutes at a time). Study hypothesis: Gennarino will lead to significant symptomatic improvement - At the clinic: monthly examinations at the first 2 months, and then every 3 months, including whole saliva collection and questionnaire; at the first visit impression taking for GenNarino preparation

Effect of Photobiomodulation on ph and Salivary Flow

Xerostomia

Changes in salivary parameters, such as decreased flow, changes in pH and composition, can lead to changes in oral health. Saliva is responsible for the homeostasis of the oral cavity and is therefore directly related to the occurrence of caries, periodontitis, fungal and bacterial infections. These situations compromise the quality of life of the population and for this reason prevention and treatment strategies need to be studied and developed. Photobiomodulation is an alternative that has been increasingly practiced by health professionals. It consists of the application of light to a biological system that is capable of inducing a photochemical process, mainly in the mitochondria, thus stimulating the production of energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which can increase cellular metabolism and produce effects. as analgesia and tissue regeneration. In dentistry, studies using photobiomodulation have shown promise in improving some salivary parameters. This study aimed to compare the action of infrared light on salivary flow and pH, using two application techniques: extraoral (G1) and intra and extraoral (G2), with the application interval between the two techniques being 7 days
