Forced Air Heating to Prevent Hypothermia During Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiography

Temperature Management During Sedation for Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiography

The aim of this prospective observational study is to evaluate the role of a convective warming blanket to prevent hypothermia during sedation for an endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC).

Blood Warming in Preterm Infants to Decrease Hypothermia

Preterm BirthBlood Transfusion Complication1 more

Background/significance: Over 100,000 early preterm infants are born annually in the United States and suffer morbidity and mortality during hospitalization in a neonatal intensive care unit. One such condition is hypothermia. Hypothermia has been defined as a contributor of neonatal morbidity by The World Health Organization. Another acute morbidity is anemia in preterm infants due to the prematurity and frequent laboratory testing. Anemia requires correction with a packed red blood cells (PRBC) transfusion. Researchers have previous noted hypothermia during PRBC transfusions in preterm infants. Objective: To use a commercial blood warmer in the neonatal intensive care setting to prevent hypothermic body temperatures (<36.5°C) in very preterm infants during PRBC transfusions. Process: Based on a completed national survey of neonatal intensive care nurses and PRBC transfusion practices and personal NICU experience, we designed this randomized control trial in 140 very preterm infants in a Southeastern, level III neonatal intensive care unit. Outcomes: Very preterm infants (<32 weeks gestational age) receiving PRBC transfusions warmed by the commercial blood warmer will have a lower incidence of central body hypothermia post transfusion (temperatures <36.5C), compared to infants receiving PRBC transfusions by standard of care. Very preterm infants (<32 weeks gestational age) receiving PRBC transfusions warmed by the commercial blood warmer will have a higher post transfusion mean abdominal skin body temperature when compared to infants receiving PRBC transfusions by standard of care. Hypothesis : The results of this trial could show that very preterm infants experience hypothermia during PRBC transfusions, and thus provide the evidence to support the need for warmed PRBC transfusions in very preterm infants nationwide.

Telemedicine to Improve Use of Therapeutic Hypothermia in Rural Settings

Neonatal Encephalopathy

This pilot intervention trial will assess the feasibility of a live consultation between community hospital providers and tertiary care providers employing a novel teleconsult platform, Maine Neonatal Encephalopathy Teleconsult (Maine NET), on the time to initiation of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) for 10 infants born in community hospitals in Maine compared with matched historical controls. Community hospital providers and tertiary care center provider satisfaction with the Maine NET platform will also be assessed. We hypothesize that immediately available expert assessment via a teleconsult platform will promote earlier implementation of TH and be associated with high levels of provider satisfaction.

Rectal Temperature Measurement in Detecting Hypothermia During Hip Arthroscopy

Hip ArthropathyHypothermia1 more

Irrigation fluids used during hip arthroscopy surgery are generally stored at room temperature and are cooler than the core temperature of the patient. They are used abundantly during hip arthroscopy surgery. The aim of this study is to detect local and then general hypothermia that may occur by monitoring the body temperature from the rectal mucosa of patients undergoing hip arthroscopy, using irrigation fluids of different temperatures and comparing it with the temperature measured from the temporal region.

Hypothermia Risk With Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy

Acute Kidney InjuryHypothermia

The present study aims at testing if the TherMax blood warmer is more accurate and reliable in reaching and maintaining chosen target temperature during continuous renal replacement therapy as compared to the Prismaflo IIS blood warmer used for the PrismaFlex system.

Effect of Reflective Blanket on Undesirable Perioperative Hypothermia

Abdominal SurgeryGeneral Anesthesia1 more

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of using reflective blankets, which is a passive insulation product, on preventing UPH in patients scheduled for abdominal surgery under general anesthesia. It will also be evaluated whether the reflective blanket has an effect on the patients' thermal comfort and shivering levels. Inconsistent results have been reported in studies using reflective blankets. This inconsistency may be due to the fact that it was used at different stages of the perioperative process or that the body was not adequately isolated. In this study, we aimed to use the reflective blanket throughout the perioperative process and to isolate the patient's body as much as possible. Reflective blankets are inexpensive, practical to use and easy to store. With the positive results that can be obtained from this study, it can be used not only in operating rooms, but also in intensive care or other services where hypothermia is likely to occur. Within the scope of the study, a Reference group (warm air blower device), an Intervention group (reflective blanket) and a Control group (routine hospital procedure) will be established. The study was planned to be conducted with a total of 102 patients, with 34 patients in each group. In this study; patients' vital signs, coagulation tests, thermal comfort and shivering levels will be evaluated. Patients in the Reference and Intervention group will be warmed before the surgery (15 minutes), during the surgery, and until they are transferred from the post-anaesthetic care unit to the clinic. No heating process will be applied to the control group by the researcher. All patients transferred to the clinic will undergo the routine care procedure of the hospital.

Mild Hypothermia and Acute Kidney Injury in Liver Transplantation

CirrhosisEnd Stage Liver Disease8 more

Acute kidney injury (AKI), or worsening kidney function, is a common complication after liver transplantation (20-90% in published studies). Patients who experience AKI after liver transplantation have higher mortality, increased graft loss, longer hospital and intensive care unit stays, and more progression to chronic kidney disease compared with those who do not. In this study, half of the participants will have their body temperature cooled to slightly lower than normal (mild hypothermia) for a portion of the liver transplant operation, while the other half will have their body temperature maintained at normal. The study will evaluate if mild hypothermia protects from AKI during liver transplantation.

Placing Preterm Infants in Polyethylene Bags Immediately After Birth

NewbornInfant2 more

Primary objective: To determine if placing preterm infants in a polyethylene bag (PB) immediately after birth, before the umbilical cord is clamped, will increase the number of preterm infants with a normal temperature on admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
