EncephalopathyHypoxic IschemicThe goal of this observational study is to identify early signs of poor neurodevelopmental outcome by performing specific neurological, neurophysiological and neuroimaging assessments in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy treated with therapeutic hypothermia. The main questions it aims to answer are: Identify patients at risk of neuromotor, cognitive and epileptic sequelae Plan early rehabilitation programs and future trials on early neuroprotection in infant at risk of neurodevelopmental disability Participants will be involved in serial assessment: Before and after therapeutic hypothermia and before discharge: neurological assessment, according to the modified Sarna (t) score, Thompson's score and Hammersmith Neonatal Neurological Examination (HNNE); General Movement Assessment Amplitude integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG) within 6 hours of life, for 6 hours. Neonatal Cranial Ultrasonography within 6 hours of life, in the third and seventh day of life. Brain magnetic resonance imaging between 7 and 14 days. Electroencephalogram (EEG) within 7 days. After discharge study population will perform: EEG between 3 and 6 months. Neurological assessment using Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE) at 3-6-9-12 months. General Movement Assessment at 3 months. Neurodevelopmental assessment using the Griffiths Mental Development Scales at 24 months. Cognitive assessment using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence between 36 and 41 months. Motor performance assessment using Movement ABC between 42 and 48 months.

The Efficacy of External Warming During Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery
HypothermiaMorbid Obesity1 moreExternal warming is routinely used in general surgery to offset the deleterious effects of hypothermia. It entails deployment of a disposable, external heating blanket attached to a regulated hot-air pump. The need for external warming in the morbidly obese population undergoing short laparoscopic procedures is unclear. If proven to be unnecessary, time and momentary costs could be lowered. The study will compare core-temperature dynamics during laparoscopic bariatric procedures anticipated to last <2h. The study group will be left without a warming blanket while the control group will receive routine external warming. Post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) arrival temperature will also be recorded.

Bacterial MeningitisBacterial meningitis is a severe infection of the envelope which surrounds the brain. It is sometimes responsible for a cerebral oedema mattering with a loss of consciousness (coma). The usual treatment of this affection is based on the antibiotic therapy, anti-inflammatory drug and resuscitation measures in intensive care setting but the prognosis of comatose patients remains poor. Moderate hypothermia (body temperature is downed between 32 and 34°C°) made the proof of its efficiency in certain cerebral pathologies (notably the cerebral distress after cardiac arrest or oxygen lack in neonates) but was never evaluated in meningitis. In meningitis animal studies and in severe traumatic brain injury, moderate hypothermia is able to diminish cerebral oedema and brain inflammation. Thus, the objective of this study is to compare two strategies: only usual care or usual care completed by moderate hypothermia. The body temperature will be lowered between 32 and 34°C by means of a catheter placed in a big vein and connected to a machine in which circulates a cold liquid, or by means of an external cooling (ice-cold blanket, ice packs placed on the body). Whatever technique is chosen, the technique is perfectly mastered by the teams which take charge of the patients. After 48 hours, the technique of hypothermia will be suspended and body temperature will return passively and gradually to normal. The investigators believe that moderate hypothermia will improve the prognosis of the most severe patients.
