Performance testing of pulse oximeters. The protocol involves brief stable arterial oxygen desaturation in healthy volunteers and sampling arterial blood when a stable level of hypoxia has been attained and during different motion scenarios. The blood sample is analyzed for oxygen saturation with a gold standard bench CO-oximeter. This protocol is aligned with the latest ISO and FDA guidance documents for pulse oximeter testing.

After obtaining the approval of the hospital ethics committee, this prospective, observational study included written informed consent from 51 participants with 19<BMI<25 m/kg2 and 51 participants with BMI>40 m/kg2 undergoing an elective surgical requiring endotracheal intubation. In addition to standard monitors, an oxygen reserve index (ORI) sensor was placed and baseline values were recorded. The participants were preoxygenated until end expiratory oxygen concentration (EtO2) is reached 90%. After anesthesia induction and endotracheal intubation, the breathing circuit was not connected endotracheal tube until the peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) decreased until 95%.ORİ and SpO2 values were continuously recorded. Time of tolerable apnea, ORI warning, SpO2 warning and added warning were also recorded.

This project will consist of two studies, each investigating resting and exercise cardio-respiratory responses during exposure to hypoxia in individuals born prematurely and individuals born at full term of two different age groups: Kids (10-14 yrs) and Adults (18-22 yrs).Additional study will be performed on a preterm adult cohort (15 participants) that will investigate potential differences between hypobaric and normobaric hypoxia as outlined in the following section.

Correlation of Risk Factors and Severity of Hypoxic-ischaemic Encephalopathy

The first aim of this study is to analyse perinatal risk factors leading to hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy in term and near term neonates born in Switzerland who were admitted to the neonatal and intensive care units offering hypothermia therapy. Further, investigators would like to analyse the influence of these perinatal risk factors on the severity of encephalopathy during and after hypothermia therapy.
