YCFM (Youth Correctional Facilities Males)

Chlamydial Infection

The proposed study is a single center (with multiple long-term YCFs) treatment trial of the CDC-recommended azithromycin regimen (1 gm PO once) for chlamydia in males. This study is designed primarily to determine the frequency of chlamydia treatment failure following azithromycin in males who do versus do not have urethral symptoms of urethral discharge and/or dysuria. Anticipated enrollment is 446 males, between the age of 12 to 21 years old, with subject participation duration of 28 days and study duration of 4 years. The primary objective of the study is to assess the microbiological efficacy of azithromycin in uncomplicated Chlamydia trachomatis infection in males with versus without urethral symptoms in YCFs.

High Dose Vitamin-D Substitution in Patients With COVID-19: a Randomized Controlled, Multi Center...

Covid19Vitamin D Deficiency4 more

The world is currently facing a pandemic with the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) which leads to the disease of COVID-19. Risk factors for a poor outcome of COVID-19 have so far been identified as older age and co-morbidity including chronic respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and current smoking status. Previous studies found, that vitamin D deficiency is more prevalent among patients with these risk factors. There are observational studies reporting independent associations between low serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (the major circulating vitamin D metabolite) and susceptibility to acute respiratory tract infection. Vitamin D substitution in patients with COVID-19 who show a vitamin D deficiency should therefore be investigated for efficacy and safety. The study is designed as a randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind study. The objective of the study is to test the hypothesis that patients with vitamin D deficiency suffering from COVID-19 treated under standardized conditions in hospital will recover faster when additionally treated with a single high dose of vitamin D compared to standard treatment only.

Cryotherapy on Inflammatory Profile and Postoperative Pain Levels in Endodontic Infections

Apical PeriodontitisPostoperative Pain1 more

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of cryotherapy applications on the inflammatory cytokine and collagenase matrix metalloproteinase levels during root canal treatment and postoperative pain intensity and incidence. Mandibular premolar teeth of 60 male patients within the 20-30 years old range, diagnosed with asymptomatic apical periodontitis will be included to the study for this purpose. The experimental protocols consist clinical and laboratory phases. In clinical phase, procedures of cryotherapy and control groups will be applied in 2-visit-root canal treatment. The samples, which were collected during root canal treatment, will be subjected to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analysis in laboratory. Levels of interleukin and inflammatory destructive enzymes will be determined in collected samples. During the analysis of visual analogue scale scores, the correlation between the changes of the cytokine and proteolytic enzyme levels and presence and intensity of pain will be evaluated.
