A Randomized Prospective Study of Pyrimethamine Therapy for Prevention of Toxoplasmic Encephalitis...

ToxoplasmosisCerebral1 more

To evaluate pyrimethamine as a prophylactic agent against toxoplasmic encephalitis in individuals who are coinfected with HIV and latent Toxoplasma gondii. Toxoplasmic encephalitis is a major cause of illness and death in AIDS patients. Standard treatment for toxoplasmic encephalitis is to combine pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine. Continuous treatment is necessary to prevent recurrence of the disease, but constant use of pyrimethamine/sulfadiazine is associated with toxicity. Clindamycin has been shown to be effective in treatment of toxoplasmic encephalitis in animal studies. This study evaluates pyrimethamine as a preventive treatment against toxoplasmic encephalitis (per 3/26/91 amendment, clindamycin arm was discontinued).

A Waiting Room-Delivered Video to Enhance Clinical Outcomes Among Persons Living With HIV

HIV Infections

The purpose of this project is to beta-test a brief waiting room video intervention that promotes early initiation of antiretroviral treatment among treatment-naïve HIV-positive patients, adherence to antiretroviral treatment and retention in care among HIV-positive patients currently on therapy, sexual risk reduction tailored to HIV-positive persons, and patient-initiated discussion of these topics with their health providers. The video is currently being created, and will be ready for beta-testing by June 1, 2016. Results of the beta-testing will be used to refine and improve the video before dissemination to HIV/AIDS treatment facilities nationally. This video project is being funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention (DHAP).

Impact of a Multifactorial Program of Hand Hygiene on Infections in Children Attending in Day-care...

Respiratory Tract InfectionsGastroenteritis

It is well known that attending Day Care Centres (DCCs) can lead to an increase in the frequency of infections, due to the high incidence at this age and also the ease of transmission among children. This high incidence respiratory tract infections (RTIs) and acute gastroenteritis can also have a significant impact on the cost of health care systems, increasing the number of medical visits, hospitalizations and prescribing medications as symptomatic drugs or unnecessary antibiotics in some cases. The aim of the study was to determine whether a multifactorial hand-hygiene program (handwashing with soap and water vs hand sanitizer vs control group) reduce episodes due to RTIs and gastroenteritis in children attending DCCs. In addition, analyze the cost-effectiveness of these interventions.

Study to Assess Safety and Activity of Combination Therapy of VRC07-523LS and Vorinostat on HIV-infected...

HIV-1 Infection

Adult participants (18-64 years old) with HIV-1 Infection on ART with a CD4 T cell count ≥ 350 cells/mm3 and viral suppression for ≥ 24 months will be enrolled on this study. Participants will receive two series of combination therapy consisting of one (1) intravenous (IV) dose of VRC-HIVMAB075-00-AB (VRC07-523LS) followed by 10 oral (PO) doses of Vorinostat (VOR) taken every 72 hours. Each series will last approximately 1 month and the two series will be separated by at least one month. Combination ART is maintained throughout the study. Participants will be on this study for approximately 28 weeks (or about 7 months). The purpose of this study is to: Evaluate the safety of two series of a VRC07-523LS infusion followed by multiple oral doses of VOR Determine if combining VRC07-523LS and VOR can have an impact on non-active HIV virus.
