This Phase 2b study will evaluate the safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity of an RSV vaccine in pregnant participants who receive either one of 2 dose levels of the vaccine, formulated with or without aluminum hydroxide, or placebo, and investigate safety and characteristics of antibodies in their infants.

Acute Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (Common Cold)

The aim of the present study is to test the efficacy of the combination of two probiotic bacteria in reducing the severity of upper respiratory tract infections (common cold) in healthy children attending day care or school. The probiotic bacteria used are Lactobacillus plantarum strain DSM 15312 and Lactobacillus paracasei DSM 13434 at a total dose of 1 x 10^9 CFU/tablet and day and will be consumed for a period of 12 weeks.

A phase II trial multicenter, observer-blind, randomized, dose-ranging, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the immunogenicity, safety, and tolerability of a single intramuscular injection of plant-derived Seasonal VLP Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine administered to healthy adults 18-49 years of age. A total of three hundred subjects will be randomized in four (4) groups of 75 subjects to receive one injection of either a low, a medium, or a high dose level of the quadrivalent VLP influenza vaccine or the placebo preparation (100 millimolar (mM) phosphate buffer + 150 mM sodium chloride (NaCl) + 0.01% Tween 80).

Probiotics are microorganisms that are believed to provide health benefits when consumed. The term probiotic is currently used to name ingested microorganisms associated with beneficial effects to humans and animals. Probiotics are popularized in the lay literature for many different clinical problems. They have been studied in infants and children as a preventive or treatment for a variety of infections. Studies on the medical benefits of probiotics have yet to reveal a cause-effect relationship, and their medical effectiveness has yet to be conclusively proven for most of the studies conducted thus far. The putative benefit of probiotics in the prevention of infection relates to potential benefits to the innate and adaptive immune systems of infants. The goals of this investigation are to study immune system cell function and microbiome in children who are taking probiotics. To accomplish this goal, we propose a pilot study for which we will obtain blood and nasopharyngeal and stool samples prior to and post probiotic use in children greater than 12 months-36 months over a 27-38 day period

Serum levels of 25(OH) VD and TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-6 will be detected by ELISA technique among elite athletes and control population in spring and autumn.

Influenza infection results in an estimated 31 million outpatient visits, 55,000 to 974,200 hospitalizations, and 3,000 to 49,000 deaths. Membership in household in which someone else has influenza is the major risk factor for contracting influenza. The household secondary attack rate (SAR) is as high as 19% based on laboratory-confirmed influenza and 30% based on symptoms. Non-pharmaceutical preventive measures, including education, may play a role in decreasing transmission, but are only effective if started within 36 hours of symptom onset in index cases. Yet, most interventions are delayed because they are not initiated until care is sought. The investigators have demonstrated in one primarily Latino, urban community sample, that text messaging can be used to rapidly identify community members with influenza-like illness (ILI) early in an illness. This early identification would enable implementation of an educational intervention in the optimal time frame to reduce influenza transmission. Providing education within a text message is a proven successful strategy to influence behavior. Text messaging itself is scalable, low-cost, and can be used in low literacy populations. However, using text-message based surveillance to trigger a real-time text-message behavioral educational intervention to decrease household influenza transmission has not been assessed.

Study of RV521 in the Treatment of Adult Subjects Who Have Undergone HCT With an URTI With RSV

RV521 is to being developed to treat RSV infection and disease in susceptible individuals at high risk for complications. This is an international, multicenter, placebo-controlled study. Eligible subjects are adults with a documented symptomatic RSV infection who have undergone HCT transplantation and are moderately to severely immunocompromised. Qualified subjects will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive RV521 or placebo, twice daily for 10 days.

This is a Phase 2, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, proof-of-concept study of intranasal foralumab in hospitalized subjects with severe COVID-19 and pulmonary inflammation. Foralumab is a fully human second generation anti-CD3 mAb with a modified Fc unit (two amino acid substitutions) composed of 2 heavy chains with an immunoglobulin (Ig) G1constant region and 2 light chains with a kappa constant region. In a separate Phase 2 randomized, controlled, pilot trial conducted to assess safety, tolerability, and efficacy in 39 patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 in Brazil, showed that intranasal foralumab may be of benefit in modulating immune reactivity and in reducing pulmonary inflammation. Importantly, intranasal administration of foralumab was well tolerated with no clinically significant changes in blood cell counts (including blood lymphocytes), no evidence of hypersensitivity, and no serious adverse events (SAEs) were reported in the study.

Azithromycin Plus Hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 Infection

This is a randomized, double-blinded, Phase 3, multi-center trial of the clinical and microbiologic response of patients with a respiratory tract infection (RTI) due to coronavirus treated with a combination of azithromycin and hydroxychloroquine. Approximately 200 patients with symptoms of an RTI who test positive for SARS-CoV-2 by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) will receive a combination of azithromycin 500 mg and hydroxychloroquine 600 mg or matching placebos for six consecutive days. There will be two treatment regimens into which patients are randomized so that all patients will receive some active therapy.
