Outcomes of Patients Who Fail to Respond to Fluconazole Treatment of Severe Candida Albicans Infections...

Fungal Infection by Site

The primary aims of this study are to identify and characterize the immediate consequences of patients who fail fluconazole treatment during the treatment of severe infection, and to determine if fluconazole failures are more frequently associated with fluconazole-resistant or fluconazole-susceptible strains of C. albicans.

Markers of Atopy in Children With Presumed Early Exposure to Allergens, Unhygienic Conditions, and...

Atopic Diseases

There are many studies regarding possible causes of increasing trend in frequency of allergic diseases in the last three decades. Main causes of this trend are: decrease of infectious diseases frequency, improvement in life level, changes in diet and lactic acid bacterias elimination from digestive tract. Primary Purpose of this study is to compare the prevalence of atopy and atopic diseases in two child populations: foster care and reference children and - to define risk and protective factors for the development of atopy.

Multinational Study of Acinetobacter Bloodstream Infection: Clinical Outcomes and Global Epidemiology-PITT...

Acinetobacter Infections

The objectives of this multinational study are to assess the clinical outcomes of patients with Acinetobacter bloodstream infection and to further assess the predictors of mortality in this patient population. We also aim to characterize the molecular epidemiology of this remarkable organism in an attempt to further understand its transmission dynamics on a global level and to determine whether increased pathogenicity is geographically dependent.

Indolent Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma

The purpose of this study is to determine if an infectious disease may be associated with the new lymphoma diagnosis. Infections to be tested include: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori): This is a bacteria sometimes found in the stomach that has been associated with a particular kind of lymphoma, gastric MALT. We are interested to learn if the H. pylori infection may be associated with other indolent lymphomas. Hepatitis C: This virus infection of the liver has been found in association with non-follicular lymphomas in Italy. We want to determine if the infection is associated with lymphomas in the United States. Bacterial overgrowth of the small bowel: Since indolent lymphomas often affect the lymph nodes surrounding the small bowel, it may be possible that an infection within the bowel is stimulating lymphoma growth. This has never been demonstrated to date, and will be studied in this clinical study. Epstein-Barr virus: This is the virus that causes infectious mononucleosis or "mono." It has been associated with other rapidly growing lymphomas, but not indolent lymphoma.
