With this study, we want to see if we can use a kind of white blood cell called T cells to prevent or treat AdV and CMV infection. We will grow these T cells from the cord blood before the patients transplant. These cells have been trained to attack adenovirus/CMV-infected cells and are called Adenoviral/CMV-specific cytotoxic (killer) T-cells or "AdV/CMV-CTL." We would plan to give the patient one dose of AdV/CMV-CTL any time from 30 days after their transplant. We have used T cells made in this way from the blood of donors to prevent infections in patients who are getting a bone marrow or blood stem cell transplant but this will be the first time we make them from cord blood.

Patient's on this protocol have a type of blood cell cancer, other blood disease or a genetic disease and have received a stem cell transplant. The donor of the stem cells was either a brother or sister, another relative, or a closely matched unrelated donor. The patient is being asked to participate in this study which tests if blood cells from the donor that have been grown in a special way, can prevent or be an effective treatment for early infection by three viruses - Epstein Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV) and adenovirus. Adenovirus is a virus that usually causes symptoms of a common cold, but can cause serious life-threatening infections in patients who have weak immune systems. It can affect the lungs and cause very serious pneumonia, and can also damage the gut, liver, pancreas and eyes.CMV can also cause serious infections in patients with weak or suppressed immune systems. It usually affects the lungs, causing a very serious pneumonia, but it can also affect the gut, the liver and the eyes. Approximately 2/3 of normal people harbor this virus in their body. In healthy people CMV rarely causes any problems because the immune system can keep it under control, but after a transplant, the risk of developing CMV disease is much higher because the immune system is so weak. EBV is the virus that causes glandular fever. It is also a life long infection like CMV that is normally controlled by the immune system. When immunity is weak, the virus can become active and cause fevers, enlarged lymph nodes and sometimes a type of cancer called lymphoma. Investigators want to see if a kind of white blood cell called T lymphocytes (T cells)can be used to prevent and treat adenovirus, CMV and EBV in the early stages of reactivation or infection. T cells have been grown from the patient's stem cell donor in the laboratory in a way that will train them to recognize the virus and control it when they are given after a transplant. This treatment with specially trained T cells (also called CTLs) has had activity against these viruses in previous studies and in this study investigators want to see if they still have activity when they are made in a simpler and faster way. These donor-derived multivirus-specific special cell lines are an investigational product not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether donor-derived multivirus-specific special cell lines are safe and can control three viruses: EBV, CMV and adenovirus.

Infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) can cause liver scarring, or cirrhosis, and this usually occurs more rapidly among people infected with both HCV and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). People infected with both HCV and HIV have poor response to the current HCV treatments. This phase II pilot study evaluated whether adding a new HCV medication improves response to the current standard HCV treatment with pegylated interferon and ribavirin in people with both HCV and HIV.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a novel combination antiretroviral therapy regimen consisting of maraviroc plus darunavir/ritonavir in treatment-naive patients infected with R5-tropic HIV-1. The hypothesis is that in treatment-naive subjects infected with R5-tropic HIV-1, combination antiretroviral therapy with maraviroc plus darunavir/ritonavir is well tolerated and efficacious.

This pilot study aims to evaluate Maraviroc intensification strategy during 24 weeks in HIV infected patients under efficient (CV< 50 cp/mL), controlled antiretroviral therapy (≥ 6 months) and uncompleted immune restoration (CD4<350 cells/mL and CD4 earning <100 cells/mL during last 24 months). The study will include 60 patients whose follow up is carried out for 48 weeks. recruitment period will be maintained for 12 months.

Upper Respiratory Tract Infections

Parents with children aged 3-11 will participate in this study. About 500 children will take part in the study. We expect about half of those children will develop symptoms of a respiratory infection. Active participation in this study will last 14 days after a parent reports symptoms of a respiratory infection in a participant. Those children who do meet the study criteria of symptoms will then be randomly placed (like a flip of a coin) into one of 2 groups to take either COLD-FX® or placebo for 3 days. A placebo will look exactly like COLD-FX® but contains no active ingredients. The participant has an equal chance of being placed in either of the above groups. The study is double-blind, so neither the participant nor the study staff will know which study group the participant was placed in until the study is completed. If this information is needed in an emergency at any time throughout the study, it is quickly available from the sponsor. Participation in the study will be for 14 days after symptoms of a respiratory infection are reported to study staff. Your child will take the study product for 3 days, you will complete a daily diary, receive 4 phone calls and be seen for a final study visit to review the diary and complete a final health check of your child.

This is a pilot study of treatment of acute HIV infection with a once daily regimen of Emtricitabine, Tenofovir and Efavirenz. The primary objectives of this study are: To determine the safety and tolerability, and the virologic and immunologic efficacy of FTC, TDF, and efavirenz given once daily to patients with acute HIV infection. To assess the impact of once daily therapy combined with a standardized adherence program on treatment adherence, virologic suppression, and rate of viral load decline in blood and infectious fluids (semen, cervico-vaginal secretions). To define the prevalence of genotypic and phenotypic resistance to antiretroviral agents among persons diagnosed with acute HIV infection in the Southeastern United States.

After spinal cord injury, patients have frequent urinary tract infections (UVI). Vitamin C is usually prescribed to prevent such infection, but the efficacy of the treatment is poorly documented. In the study, patients will be randomised either to receive vitamin C daily, or not, for one year, and clinical episodes of UVI will be registered. The null hypothesis is that vitamin C will not reduce the number of UVI episodes by 30%.

multicenter, randomized (1:1), semi-single blind study comparing the safety and efficacy of HDSD daptomycin (10 mg/kg q24h for 4 days) with that of comparator (vancomycin +/- SSP for 7-14 days) in patients with cSSSI due to Gram-positive bacteria. Patients will be randomized on a 1:1 basis to receive either daptomycin 10 mg/kg i.v. q24h for 4 days or vancomycin 1 g. q12h for up to 14 days.
