InfluenzaTo compare immune responses to measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella antigens following vaccination in children who receive FluMist concurrently with MMRIIÒ and VARIVAXÒ and in children who receive an intranasal placebo mist concurrently with MMRIIÒ and VARIVAXÒ (Group 2 vs. Group 1). To compare immune responses to the three strains of influenza (H1N1, H3N2, and B) following a two dose regimen of FluMist in children who receive the initial FluMist dose concurrently with MMRIIÒ and VARIVAXÒ and in children who receive two doses of FluMist alone (Group 2 vs. Group 3).Secondary: To assess the safety and tolerability of concurrent administration of FluMist with MMRIIÒ and VARIVAXÒ.
Revaccination With Subunit Influenza A/Vietnam/1203/2004 (H5N1) Vaccine
InfluenzaThe purpose of this study is to determine whether having received an H5 vaccine in the past primes the immune system to respond rapidly to another dose of H5 vaccine. One hundred seventeen participants in a previous vaccine study (involving the A/Hong/Kong/97 virus) during the fall of 1998 at the University of Rochester will be eligible to enroll in this study. Participation in this study will up to 64 days and will involve donation of small samples of blood 7, 28, and 56 days after vaccination.
Effectiveness of Influenza Vaccination Among General Practitioners
InfluenzaBesides the personal protection, influenza vaccination especially needs to prevent transmission of influenza between GPs and their patients. The question remains if the vaccine is adding substantial benefit to the natural acquired immunity of GPs. Doubts are raised if an inactivated vaccine, which elicit especially humoral immune response, can give enough protection against virus replication and subclinical influenza infections. Until now no effectiveness studies of influenza vaccination were performed among GPs. This study will assess the effectiveness of an inactivated influenza vaccine in GPs against clinical respiratory tract infections and more particular against influenza cases with influenza positive nose and throat swabs (diagnosed by RT-PCR).

Swine Flu (Novel Influenza A H1N1) Vaccine Study
InfluenzaIn the first half of this year a novel Influenza A H1N1 virus has resulted in an influenza pandemic. The United Kingdom has seen a particularly high incidence of disease. The highest rates of disease are being seen in young children. In anticipation of an influenza pandemic two vaccine manufacturers, Baxter and GlaxoSmithKline, have gained marketing authorization approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) for a pandemic strain vaccine under the "mockup" dossier route based on limited clinical trial data for a candidate H5N1 vaccine. This "mockup" dossier route for pandemic influenza vaccines allows the submission of a core pandemic dossier during the interpandemic period, which results in the approval of a mockup pandemic vaccine. This is followed by a fast track approval of the pandemic vaccine based on the submission of the pandemic variation when the situation arises. The Baxter and GlaxoSmithKline vaccines have now been modified to cover the novel influenza A H1N1 strain. Given the high rates of swine flu disease in children, this age group is likely to particularly benefit from immunization against this virus, however there are few data on the use of these vaccines in a pediatric population. The proposed study therefore aims to assess the immunogenicity, safety, and tolerability of these two H1N1 vaccines when administered as two doses three weeks apart to children aged 6 months to 12 years of age.

Safety, Tolerability and Pharmacokinetic Study of Biota-CS-8958
InfluenzaThis study will look at the safety, tolerability and what the body does to CS-8958 given to 40 healthy volunteers 18-55 years old. CS-8958 is a dry-powder investigational drug that is breathed into the lungs through an inhaler device. The researchers will collect information about any problems that volunteers have while taking the drug and about changes in blood pressure and how the heart is working. Volunteers will have breathing tests, physical examinations, and blood samples collected for laboratory tests. The researchers will also look at how much of the medication travels throughout the body versus how much stays only in the lungs. Doses of the medication will be tested at one level and then at higher and higher levels after a safety committee reviews the safety and tolerability information on volunteers prior to the next higher dose being given. Each volunteer will participate for up to 6 weeks from initial screening to the follow up visit and spend 7 days in the clinic.
