This study wishes to understand: whether vaccination against influenza in coronary artery disease (myocardial infarction and stable angina) patients is as effective as it is in healthy subjects; whether vaccination really decreases the episodes of influenza infection in those coronary artery disease patients who receive the vaccine than those who do not.

Influenza

This study will compare the influenza A/H5N1 virus vaccine given by injection in the muscle versus injection in the skin in healthy adults. The study will look at the safety of the injections, how the body reacts, and what the body's immune response does when the vaccine is given in the muscle versus in the skin. The study will look at 226 healthy volunteers, ages 18-49 years old. Study procedures will include getting 2 doses of vaccine 28 days apart, physical exams, follow-up clinic visits to check the places on the body where each vaccine was given, and blood sample collections. Volunteers will complete a memory aid by writing down temperatures and health changes for 7 days after each vaccination. Volunteers will be involved in the study for up to 241 days.

Since influenza vaccines are administered every year because of the frequent change in their antigenic composition, the safety and immunogenicity profile of GSK Biologicals' influenza vaccine GSK576389A will be re-evaluated after repeated vaccine administration. In this study, the subjects previously enrolled in study 104887 will receive a dose with the 2007-2008 season's formulations of Fluarix or GSK576389A. Only subjects who were previously enrolled in study 104887 are eligible for participation in this study.

Influenza Vaccines

Vaccination is currently the most effective means of controlling influenza and preventing its complications and mortality in persons at risk. Once a year, a meeting of World Health Organization (WHO) experts takes place, leading to a recommendation on the influenza A and B strains that should be used for the production of vaccine for the coming influenza season. For the strains which do not change from the previous year, the vaccine can be formulated from the old mono bulk from the previous year. Bulks as old as 12 months may be blended to make trivalent inactivated vaccine (TIV) under the current Canadian and US licenses. This study is conducted to evaluate safety and immunogenicity of Fluviral vaccines made with the aged bulk material compared with the new bulk material. This protocol posting has been updated in order to comply with the FDA Amendment Act, Sept 2007.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety, any adverse events or side effects, and the body's immune response to an experimental flu vaccine [Inactivated Influenza A/H7N7 Vaccine] being given in increasing doses. Researchers will try to find the smallest dose of flu vaccine needed to cause antibody responses against the flu virus in both single and repeat doses. The study will enroll 125 healthy adults ranging in age from 18 to 40 years old. Subjects will be given 2 doses of the vaccine 28 days apart. Study procedures will include obtaining a medical history, physical exam, blood sample collections, and use of patient memory aids. The volunteers will be in the study for about 7 months.
