Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine

The Department of Health has recently announced the implementation of annual vaccination for all those aged 18 years and under, with live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV), which is delivered as a nasal spray. This study seeks primarily to measure antibody responses to the LAIV vaccination over three subsequent years and will involve six blood samples, six dried blood spots (taken from the end of the blood sample needle) and six oral fluid samples - before and three weeks after each vaccination each year. These samples will allow us to assess how the immune system responds to the vaccinations in terms of the antibodies that are present.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a fixed combination of paracetamol, phenylephrine and chlorpheniramine in symptomatic treatment of common cold and flu-like illness in adults in a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial. The investigators included 146 healthy study subjects aged between 18 and 60 years who presented flu or common cold moderate to severe onset of less than 3 days (72 hours). After clinical and laboratory evaluation were randomized to receive active drug or placebo, five capsules a day, every 4 hours for 48-72h.The outcomes to assess the effectiveness involve the measurement of symptom scores, overall duration of symptoms, return to usual activities, use of rescue medication, improvement of the fever.

Oseltamivir Treatment for Children Less Than 24 Months of Age With Influenza

Influenza

The purpose of this study is to learn how to treat influenza in children less than 2 years of age. Tamiflu®, the drug being studied, is approved for treatment of children 1 year of age and older with influenza. Researchers want to learn more about the activity of Tamiflu® in the body to determine a dose of that is safe, well-tolerated, and effective in young children with influenza. Children less than 24 months of age with confirmed influenza will receive Tamiflu® 2 times a day for 5 days. Older participants will be enrolled first and younger children will be enrolled after the safety data is reviewed for older participants. Study procedures include blood samples, swabs from inside the nose, and body and nervous system evaluations. Participants may be involved in study related procedures for up to 37 days.

This research study is being done because influenza (flu) affects many people each year throughout the world. The elderly and those with chronic health problems are at greater risk for complications from the flu. The purpose of this research study is to evaluate vaccination strategies in the elderly and others receiving the influenza vaccination in order to increase protection. All subjects will receive the flu vaccine as an injection in the muscle of the upper arm. Participants may receive a booster [an extra dose of vaccine or placebo (inactive substance)] shot. Study participants will include healthy adult volunteers, ages 21-40, 60-89, or 90 years and older. Subjects will be involved in study related procedures for 6 months.

This study has been designed as a randomized, double-blind, controlled, study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of two once daily intravenous peramivir regimens (200 mg and 400 mg) versus oral oseltamivir phosphate (75 mg twice daily) in hospitalized subjects with acute serious or potentially life threatening influenza. Study treatments will be provided for up to 5 consecutive days.

The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of Fluzone High Dose vaccine and that of Fluzone® vaccine in the elderly. Primary objective: To measure the efficacy of the vaccine, defined as the prevention of laboratory-confirmed influenza caused by viral types/subtypes that are antigenically similar to those contained in the respective annual vaccine formulations. Secondary objectives: To compare the clinical efficacy of Fluzone High Dose vaccine with that of Fluzone® vaccine in elderly adults, with respect to laboratory-confirmed influenza illness caused by any type or subtype of influenza virus. To compare the clinical efficacy of Fluzone High Dose vaccine with that of Fluzone® vaccine in elderly adults, in preventing culture-confirmed influenza illness caused by viral types/subtypes antigenically similar to those contained in the respective annual vaccine formulations.

This randomized, open-label, multicenter phase 2 trial will assess the safety, efficacy, and pharmacokinetics (PK) of anti-influenza plasma in subjects with influenza A or B. Hospitalized subjects with influenza A or B that have either a low oxygen level or a high respiratory rate will be eligible for study participation. This study will enroll adults, children and pregnant women.
