Effect of Q-angle, Lateral Distal Tibial Angle and Proximal Muscle Torque on Ankle Injury

Ankle; InjurySuperficial1 more

This study was undertaken to examine the effect of Q angle, lateral distal tibial angle (LDTA), and lower extremity isometric muscle torque on ankle sprain. Among 40 participants with ankle sprain, Q angle and LDTA measurements in both extremities were performed using X-ray images, while the muscle strength in gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and quadriceps femoris were determined with hand held dynamometer, and the muscle torque was estimated by multiplying these values with the distance to the joint center. The obtained data were analyzed by separation analysis. No significant relationship was found between the Q angle and ankle sprain (p> 0.05). A strong positive correlation was found between LDTA and ankle sprain (p = 0.01). A strong negative correlation was found between quadriceps femoris muscle strength, gluteus medius muscle strength and gluteus maximus muscle strength with ankle sprain (p <0.001, p = 0.001, p <0.001, respectively). A strong negative relationship was found between quadriceps, gluteus medius and gluteus maximus muscle torques with ankle sprain (p <0.001, p = 0.011, p = 0.002, respectively). As suggested by the discrimination analysis, independent variables that contributed most to ankle injury included the gluteus maximus muscle torque (MAXIMUSTORQ) (.906), gluteus medius muscle torque (MEDIUSTORQ) (. 494), lateral distal tibial angle (.436) and quadriceps femoris muscle. torque (QUADRTORQ) (. 341), respectively. In conclusion, strengthening the quadriceps femoris, gluteus medius and gluteus maximus muscles may be suggested as an effective strategy to prevent ankle sprain. It may be helpful to pay attention to individuals with high LDTA to prevent ankle sprains.

Effect of Chronic Ankle Instability on Core Stabilization, Dynamic Balance and Agility

Ankle SprainsAnkle Injuries1 more

Ankle sprains are the most common injury in basketball, especially involving repetitive maneuvers such as acceleration, deceleration, jumping, and landing. The incidence of ankle sprain is 40% in female basketball players and 75% in male basketball players. It is also known that chronic ankle instability (CAI) develops in 20-40% of cases. The effects of chronic ankle instability on core stabilization, dynamic balance and agility in basketball players have been investigated in the literature, and it has been stated that more studies are needed on the subject. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of chronic ankle instability on core stabilization, dynamic balance and agility in basketball players playing in the university team. The hypothesis of the study is that there is a difference between core stabilization, dynamic balance and agility values of basketball players playing in the university team with and without chronic ankle instability.

Baropodometric Assessment of the Podiatric Profile of Nursing Students in Clinical Settings

Foot DiseasesAnkle Disorders Injuries

The nursing profession is highly affected by exhausting positions, namely prolonged standing and walking, which are the second work-related factor hindering foot health. In fact, the most common work-related disorders among nurses and nursing students are those related to lower limbs, particularly the foot and ankle. Such disorders, if not adequately prevented, contribute to the decrease in quality of life and high student drop-out rates. To effectively develop preventive interventions among students, namely self-care actions, it's important to assess with detail the relationship and influence that clinical settings have on foot health. According to some authors, the biomechanics of many foot disorders are still poorly understood, and more studies are needed. In this sense, the aim of this study is to understand the influence of prolonged standing and walking positions on nursing students' foot health. Moreover, what's the relationship between the podiatric profile (regional force and pressure exerted on the foot) and related signs and symptoms.

Benchmarking the iOS Balance Application Against the Berg Balance Test

ArthroplastyReplacement8 more

This study aims to benchmark the performance of an iOS application against the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), which is the most commonly used assessment tool by clinicians for measuring balance across the continuum from acute care to community-based care. An iPhone will be tied around the waist of the participant and concurrent measurements will be taken for five of the fourteen stances which comprise the BBS.

Triage-Based Application of OFAR on the Number of Radiographs Ordered

Ankle InjuriesFoot Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries account for nearly two million visits to Emergency Departments (EDs) in the United States and Canada each year. Of these injured patients, only 15% are diagnosed with actual fractures of the ankle. Due to such a small percentage, the "Ottawa Ankle and Foot Rules" (OFAR) were developed, which are a set of clinical decision-making guidelines that have been shown to be effective in diagnosing ankle and foot fractures. These rules are internationally accepted by the medical community, but are inconsistently applied. At Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), the ED triage nurses are routinely trained in how to use the Ottawa Ankle and Foot Rules, but the rules are not always applied which may result in unnecessary X-rays. These guidelines are current network "standard of care" (usual, established care) that allow nurses to decide treatment for foot and ankle injury patients; in other words, whether to send these patients for an X-ray or not. The research staff is conducting this study in order to find out if using these nurse-directed guidelines--on a regular and consistent basis--can decrease the number of X-rays ordered, decrease patient waiting times/length of stay (LOS) and increase patient satisfaction with their care in the ED. STUDY PURPOSE: The two main goals of this study are to find out if use of the Ottawa Ankle and Foot Rules by triage nurses can decrease the amount of X-rays ordered in the ED, as well as LOS. Secondary study goals are to: 1) see how many X-rays are ordered by physicians and physicians' assistants after patients are evaluated by the Ottawa Ankle and Foot Rules as not having had a fracture; and 2) evaluate patient and provider satisfaction with the care provided both when the Ottawa Foot and Ankle Rules are used and when they are not.

The Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) is Translated From English to Turkish and Assess the Validity...

Ankle; InjurySuperficial1 more

Sport activity induces a relevant risk for lower extremities especially ankle and foot structures. Athletes who participate in basketball, volleyball and soccer are predisposed. Self-reported outcome instruments have been used by clinicians to assess the treatment interventions effectiveness directed at patients with pathologies and identify impairments, disabilities and quality of life. The assessment of musculoskeletal injuries can be problem without clinical, radiological examination and on scores from patient-based questionnaires. The information from these questionnaires provides us good evidence if there is not interpretation of obtained scores. The Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) is a self-reported outcome instrument for patients with foot and ankle disorders available in English, German, and French. The FAAM has a sports subscale and activity of daily living (ADL) subscale that can assess the activities that requires higher level. The aim of this study is to translate the FAAM into Turkish language, perform a cross-cultural adaptation, and investigate the reliability, validity of the translated version in athletic population

Turkish Version of the Ankle Instability Instrument

Ankle Injuries

This study aimed to translate the Ankle Instability Instrument into Turkish language, to perform a cultural adaptation study and to evaluate its validity and reliability in the Turkish population. Ankle Instability Instrument was developed to determine the ankle instability level of individuals with a history of ankle injury. Assessment of ankle instability is particularly useful in determining the complaints and functional levels of individuals with a history of functional or chronic ankle instability. It is anticipated that introducing this scale to our language will contribute to other studies in this field.

ULD-E (Ultra Low Dose Extremities)

Wounds and InjuriesHands6 more

extremity trauma is a frequent reason for emergency room visits. There is an increase in the use of CT scanners in extremity trauma, due to a greater sensitivity of detection than X-rays, particularly for "occult fractures" and for the organization of treatment, particularly surgical treatment. As the number of CT scans increases, the reduction of the delivered dose has become a subject of interest. Among the many methods used, the use of iterative reconstruction has enabled a substantial reduction in the delivered dose without compromising image quality: low-dose and ultra-low-dose protocols (effective dose equivalent to the effective dose of the Diagnostic Reference Levels of radiographs from the same region of interest) have been developped, but have not yet been evaluated in extremity trauma. The subject of our feasibility study is to evaluate the diagnostic performance of ultra-low dose CT compared to radiographs in patients consulting for extremity trauma in the emergency room. The recent implementation in our department of a scanner dedicated to low-dose explorations as well as the optimization of protocols has allowed the realization of ultra-low-dose scans since June 2017.
