Italian Version of The Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT)

Study Design: Evaluation of the psychometric properties of a translated, culturally adapted questionnaire. Objective: Translating, culturally adapting, and validating the Italian version of the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT-I), allowing its use with Italian-speaking population to monitor both state of health and functional limitation deriving from ankle instability problems, in order to evaluate the degree of severity, without using the comparison with the opposite limb. Summary of Background Data: Lateral ankle sprain is the most common injury during sports activity, often cause of disability and of numerous complications following repeated episodes, including chronic ankle instability (CAI), which affects 32% to 74% of the aforementioned cases. Growing attention is devoted to standardized outcome measures to improve interventions for injured population. A translated form of the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT), a simple and specific tool for diagnosing chronic lateral ankle instability with excellent psychometric characteristics of both reliability and validity, has never been validated within the Italian speaking population.

The Effect of Yoga on Decreasing Risk of Fall-Related Injury in Peri and Post-Menopausal

The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of yoga on both fall risk factors AND capacity to successfully control landing and descent during a simulated fall among peri-and post- menopausal women. Older women are particularly vulnerable to sustaining fall-related injuries and although targeted exercises focusing on balance and strength may decrease the risk of falls, the ideal type of intervention to prevent injury when a fall is unavoidable is not known. Yoga is an increasingly popular health practice with potential benefits linked to improving balance, muscle strength and quality of life, but there is no evidence that yoga can improve the capacity to reduce the risk of fall-related injury. Such evidence will help to inform health promotion and fall/injury risk management for older adults.

The neurotrophic protein S100B has been promoted as a neuromarker for decades, and to reflect the severity of brain injury. On the other hand, S100B is a tumor marker. The interpretation of its serum levels may be altered by a contribution from extracerebral sources and its renal elimination. In the present study we investigate the relevance of S100B as a prognostic factor, as well as the correlation with different CT classifications in a large cohort of patients with and without brain injury. Furthermore, we examine whether S100B is elevated in brain tumors.

Spinal Cord Injury at C5-C7 Level

16 persons affected by Cervical-SCI were recruited for the study and randomly assigned to the Control Group (CG) or to the Experimental Group (EG). Persons of the CG (n = 8) executed 20 sessions of FES for the rehabilitation of hand functions (grasp or pinch), participants of the EG (n = 8) performed 20 sessions of FES and CBA in addition. The primary assessment was a modified version of Bimanual Activity Test (10 tasks); also, SCIM-II and measurement of grasping strength only in participants submitted to grasp rehabilitation were evaluated.

Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge in Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic Brain Injury

The overall goal of Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge in Traumatic Brain Injury (TRACK-TBI) study is to determine the relationships among the clinical, neuroimaging, cognitive, genetic and proteomic biomarker characteristics for the entire spectrum of TBI from concussion to coma. TRACK-TBI will validate biomarkers and outcome measures for clinical trials, advance diagnostic and prognostic models for TBI and improve clinical trial design. The Investigators are enrolling patients within 24 hours of injury who present to a TRACK-TBI site with a brain injury that meets ACRM criteria and receives a clinically indicated head CT.

Patients with severe infection and sepsis are in high risk of hypo perfusion and therefore organ affection. Temporary or permanent kidney failure is a common complication in these patients. Today's golden standard for kidney failure detection is creatinine levels rising and / or oliguria. The investigators hypothesize that an even more sensitive biomarker; neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin(NGAL) in urine can predict kidney injury before creatinine levels rise. In recent studies NGAL in urine seem to be a sensitive biomarker in these patient to predict kidney injury, but the time factor for sampling optimally is not known. In this pilot study the investigators sample the urine at admission within the first hour of hospitalization to investigate if NGAL can be used as a predictor in an emergency setting.
