The Effect of Instructed Dental Flossing on Interdental Gingival Bleeding: A Randomized Controlled...
Gingival InflammationIn this study, half of the participants will be asked to floss as normal, while the other half will receive professional instructions on flossing from a dentist. The investigators want to see if the participants who have professional flossing instructions are able to remove plaque in between the teeth more effectively, and have less gum bleeding over time. The investigators also want to see if participants who receive professional flossing instructions get better at the technique over time, and if they can match the dentist's skill by the end of the study.

Influence of Inflammation on Micronutrient Status Assessment
Healthy InfantsInflammation can influence several biochemical measurements those commonly used to interpret micronutrient status in children. Our primary objective is to investigate the effects of inflammation on several biochemical measurements used to interpret micronutrient status in children. A total of 40 infants (9-18 mo of age) will participate in this study. Investigators will use PENTA vaccines as a means to induce controlled inflammation (closely mimic to natural infection). PENTA is a combination of five different vaccine antigens (Hepatitis B (HBV)/ Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib) / Tetanus-Diphtheria-whole cell Pertussis (TDwP)). The investigators will also use two different stable isotopic retinols for the assessment of total body vitamin A stores. Baseline blood samples (5 mL) will be obtained from all infants and then randomly selected 30 infants will receive PENTA vaccines, while the other 10 infants will receive no vaccines. 24 hours after vaccination a finger-prick blood sample will be obtained from the infants in the vaccinated group to measure CRP and on the same day, blood samples (5 mL) will be obtained from infants who develop inflammation (CRP> 5mg/L) in the vaccine group and also from infants in the control group. Thus estimated plasma micronutrients and vitamin A stores before and after inflammation will calculate the effects of inflammation on the interpretation of micronutrient deficiencies based on biochemical indicator assessment.

Relationship Between LRG and Periodontal Disease
PeriodontitisAcute-Phase Response1 moreThis study aimed to investigate gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and serum levels of LRG, interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in patients with periodontitis before and after non-surgical periodontal treatment.

Adjunctive Sedation With Dexmedetomidine for the Prevention of Severe Inflammation and Septic Encephalopathy...
Sepsis-Associated EncephalopathySeptic encephalopathy (SE) is defined as acute cerebral dysfunction in patients with sepsis or septic shock. SE occurs in up to 50% of critically ill patients with sepsis and is associated with a high mortality and morbidity. The pathophysiology of SE is complex and involves increased levels of inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, Interleukin (IL)-1 and IL-6, leading to blood brain barrier dysfunction and neuronal inflammation. Several biomarkers of neuronal injury have been proposed to identify patients with SE. Of these biomarkers, S100-β has the highest sensitivity and specificity. Sedation with Dexmedetomidine (DEX) is a promising strategy for the management of these patients, as DEX has been shown to decrease the production of inflammatory mediators in experimental models of sepsis. In clinical studies, DEX lowers the incidence of delirium and critical illness polyneuropathy. However, its effectiveness in treatment and prevention of SE remains unclear. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of two standard sedation protocols (Dexmedetomidine sedation vs. Propofol / Midazolam) on serum markers of SE in critically ill patients with sepsis who require sedation and mechanical ventilation.

Contemplative Well-being Apps for the Workplace
Social BehaviorDepression1 moreThe study will examine the use and impact of a meditation app delivered to adult workforce populations facing extreme time demands. Enrollees will be randomized to either app or a wait-list group, and will be assessed in terms of job and daily functioning, well-being, and biomarkers of immune function and stress physiology, and neural structure and function prior to randomization and again at multiple time points after participants commence app engagement. In order to assess efficacy, we will examine the longitudinal changes in all measures in both the mindfulness group, compared to wait-list control group.

The Effect of Statin Treatment on Arterial Wall Inflammation as Assessed With 68Ga-DOTATATE PET-CT...
Diabetes MellitusType 21 moreTo study the effect of atorvastatin treatment on vascular uptake of 68Ga-DOTATATE in patients with Type 2 Diabetes.

Blueberries and Exercise Inflammation
Muscular InjuryThe purpose of this study is to determine if 2-weeks supplementation with blueberries (1 cup/day) compared to placebo can mitigate muscle soreness and damage, and improve inflammation resolution and metabolic recovery during a 5-day period after engaging in an acute, 90-minute bout of eccentric exercise. The primary outcome will be plasma oxylipin levels, extending previously collected data showing that blueberry ingestion decreases post-exercise oxylipins generated from cytochrome P450 enzymes.

The Effect of Avocado vs. Usual Diet on Skin Aging
Skin InflammationThis clinical trial aims to assess the effect of providing one avocado per day on skin health in comparison with a control group maintaining their habitual diets. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two equally sized groups. Both groups will be instructed to continue to follow their habitual diet but the intervention group will receive one avocado per day. Participants will be followed for outcomes for a four-month period.

Clinical Trials of Two Helichrysum Infusions in Adults
HypertensionHyperlipidemias5 moreThe study evaluates the effects of Helichrysum italicum and Helichrysum Arenarium on different components of the metabolic syndrome. The components of metabolic syndrome will be measured at baseline and four weeks after daily consumptions of either Helichrysum italicum or either Helichrysum Arenarium, and after two weeks of washout. In addition, stool samples will be also taken at baseline and after four weeks of daily consumtion of either Helichrysum italicum or either Helichrysum Arenarium.
