Prognostic Markers of Inflammation in Infants Undergoing Cardiopulmonary Bypass

Congenital Heart DefectCardiopulmonary Bypass3 more

This study evaluates the effect of heart-lung bypass on babies undergoing cardiac surgery. The investigators want to learn more about the inflammation that exposure to bypass creates in the body by studying markers of inflammation and cell injury in the bloodstream. Additionally, the investigators want to examine if these markers can predict which babies develop post-surgical complications. The hypothesis is that babies who undergo bypass will have higher levels of these markers than babies not exposed to bypass and that these markers will correlate with how the baby does clinically after surgery. This study will evaluate markers via blood sampling in babies with congenital heart disease who do not undergo cardiac surgery, those that undergo surgery without bypass, and those that undergo surgery with bypass. The overall goal is that this study will lead to useful biomarkers and lay the groundwork for future novel therapies aimed at improving outcomes for babies who require heart-lung bypass.

A Multi-center, Prospective, Single-blind, Controlled Trial Comparing Diagnostic Value of Different...

NeoplasmsInfection5 more

The aim of this study is to compare endoscopic ultrasound guided-fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) with a standard 22-gauge needle using "standard suction", "slow-pull" and "wet suction" for thoracic/abdominal solid/solid-cystic lesions. Investigators intend to compare the effectiveness and safety of the three methods in order to discover the optimized technique for obtaining diagnostic material and making accurate diagnosis.

Cannabis Observational Study on Mood, Inflammation, and Cognition

InflammationInflammatory Response2 more

This project examines the effects of cannabis on cognition and other domains of function and whether those effects are dependent upon the ratio of THC to CBD in the product. Current cannabis users are asked to stop using their typical product and to use cannabis containing different ratios of the cannabinoids THC and CBD. Participants complete baseline assessments including cognitive tasks, clinical measures, substance use history, and blood draw. Participants then acquire and use their study strain on their own, and after a period of use the mobile pharmacology laboratory goes to a location of their choosing. They complete cognitive, motor and blood-based assessments, then leave the mobile lab to use their study product one last time, returning to the mobile lab to complete cognitive, motor, and blood-based assessments immediately after use and one hour after use. A small subset of participants complete all of these procedures but use edible as opposed to flower-based products.

Dysregulated CNS Inflammation After Acute Brain Injury

Traumatic Brain InjuryAneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

By doing this study, the investigator hopes to learn how the levels of important proteins involved in inflammation change over time in patients with acute brain injury. The total amount of time participants will be asked to volunteer for this study is approximately two hours over a five day period.

Use of Esophageal String Test to Understand Symptoms, Inflammation, and Function in Eosinophilic...

Eosinophilic Esophagitis

Presently, the only method available to monitor disease activity in Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) is endoscopy with pathological review of biopsies. The overall goal of this study is to determine the ability of the Esophageal String Test (EST), a minimally invasive capsule based technology, to measure disease activity in children with EoE. Additionally, to determine esophageal distensibility in children presenting with EoE by using the EndoFLIP (functional luminal imaging probe) device during endoscopic procedures.

AsthMatic Inflammation and Neurocircuitry Activation (MINA)

Allergic Asthma

The investigators have identified areas of the brain that are activated in response to disease-related emotional information, following whole lung allergen challenge in asthma. They propose that activity in these central nervous system locations, as measured by fMRI, is associated with the intensity of allergic inflammation, provoked by segmental bronchial challenge, in the absence of significant airflow obstruction. The investigators predict that this relationship will be mediated by changes in expression of genes in the IL-1β/IL-17 pathway.

Advanced MRI for Uteroplacental Flow, Perfusion, Oxygenation & Inflammation

PregnancyObesity1 more

The purpose of the study is to develop advanced ultrasound (U/S) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging, known as MRI to study uteroplacental health. The goal of this study is to evaluate the blood and oxygen flow to the placenta using advanced U/S and MRI testing.

Protein Supplementation and Skeletal Muscle Healing Process

Skeletal Muscle DamageExercise-induced Aseptic Inflammation3 more

In this study the investigators utilized protein supplementation over an 8-day period following eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage in order to test the initial hypotheses : i) protein supplementation after exercise-induced muscle injury affects exercise-induced aseptic inflammation and muscle performance.

Does Vitamin D Supplementation Enhance Resolution of Inflammation After Community-acquired Pneumonia?...

Pneumonia

Previous research has shown that people who have been hospitalised for pneumonia are more likely to die of conditions such as heart attacks, stroke and cancer in the weeks to months after their illness. This risk is linked to raised levels of inflammation. Laboratory research shows that vitamin D can help to clear inflammation. Vitamin D deficiency is very common in the United Kingdom. The investigators are conducting this study to find out if taking vitamin D can hasten long-term recovery from pneumonia by reducing inflammation.
