POCD

This study use Loewenstein cognitive function rating scale to meet the standards of the elderly cognitive function assessment. POCD diagnostic criteria used is the recommended value Z current international law, in order to reduce the effects of exercise, we selected 50 cases of patients with age-matched healthy control group as a spouse, the same scale testing. And Loewenstein Assessment Scale cognitive function after some domestic research proved to have good sensitivity, and easy to test small changes in cognitive ability. Before the investigation began strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, the use of simple intelligence scale exclude preoperative cognitive decline in the elderly significantly, the use of depression rating scale for anxiety rating scale before surgery to exclude severe depression and severe anxiety in elderly self self patient. Testing by the same person in the same way neurocognitive assessment test twice, 7 days apart. Studies in Chinese population, susceptibility SNPs and genetic POCD but there are few reports of this project uses 1: 1 matched case-control study, by comparison POCD SNPs and control groups of different polymorphisms, polymorphisms Discussion Han population of postoperative cognitive dysfunction associated with susceptibility to find Chinese Han population of postoperative cognitive disorders genetic susceptibility markers, which provide scientific screening and early diagnosis of postoperative cognitive impairment at high risk in accordance with

Anemia of Inflammation: Investigation on Impaired Iron Regulation in Acutely Ill Patients and Their...

Anemia of Acute Inflammation

Anemia of inflammation (AI), a normochromic, normocytic anemia, associated with abnormal iron utilization, erythropoietin hyporesponsiveness, and decreased red blood cells (RBC) survival is a very common problem in hospitalized patients for acute inflammatory diseases and develops within few days from the onset of illness. Deleterious effects of anemia include increased risk of cardiac related morbidity and mortality in critically ill and older patients. Anemia is mediated by hepcidin, the 25-amino acid polypeptide hormone that is central to iron trafficking. Several studies have been performed on pathophysiology of AI in patients affected by chronic diseases but few explore iron metabolism in humans with acute inflammation. The aim is to develop effective new strategies to detect and manage AI in the setting of acutely ill patients, based on the understanding of iron balance underlying this disorder.

Malnutrition and Inflammation in Dialysis Patients in Taiwan

HemodialysisHypercholesterolemia4 more

According to the reports of the United States Renal Data System (USRDS), there is a 25% annual mortality rate with nearly 50% of all reported maintenance hemodialysis (HD) patient deaths attributed to atherosclerosis-related complications. Although traditional risk factors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) are common in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, they alone may be insufficient to account for their high prevalence of CVD. Recent evidence demonstrated high plasma homocysteine levels have been established as a risk factor of chronic inflammation and atherosclerosis in patients with ESRD. Malnutrition and inflammation was associated with poor quality of life, morbidity and mortality. We, the researchers at National Taiwan University Hospital, hope to establish the best predictive profile of HD patient outcome. Thus, we establish several protocols to complete this work.

Characterizing Knee Pain and Response to Surgery Using Local Biomarkers

Inflammation

The diagnosis and monitoring of clinically-significant pathologies of the knee remains challenging, and it is unknown why only some injuries become painful or respond to surgical intervention. The limitations of diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging result in arthroscopy that is not always beneficial. Elucidation of biochemical pathways underlying pain in this condition may aid patient selection for surgery and provide pharmacotherapeutic targets. Cytokines or a novel yet uncharacterized protein may be involved in pain following meniscus injury and diagnostic cytokine assay may help physicians differentiate patients that may benefit from arthroscopy from those that may not. Additionally, evaluating post-operative biochemical profiles may provide a method of monitoring surgical outcome and understanding post-operative continuation or remission of pain.

Inflammation in Type 2 Myocardial Infarction

Myocardial InfarctionInflammation1 more

Type 2 myocardial infarction (MI) is defined as myocardial necrosis that results from an imbalance of myocardial oxygen supply and demand. Although type 2 MI is highly prevalent in patients with critical illness and strongly associated with mortality, the pathophysiology remains poorly understood. Inflammation is central to the development of atherosclerosis, plaque rupture, and other subtypes of MI, but the role of inflammation in type 2 MI and myocardial necrosis has not been defined. The investigators aim to to delineate the mechanistic role of inflammation in myocardial necrosis and type 2 MI complicating critical medical illness.
