Aloe Vera Ointment Application and Skeletal Muscle Recovery

Skeletal Muscle DamageExercise-induced Aseptic Inflammation1 more

Aloe vera, sometimes described as pharmaceutical aloe, is a flowering succulent plant with many therapeutic properties such as wound and burn wound healing, treatment of diabetes and reduction of blood lipid profile. These benefits have been primary attributed to its high content in polysaccharides, anthraquinones and lectins. However, aloe vera includes more than 200 ingredients and nutrients (i.e. vitamins, saponins, amino acids, anthraquinones, minerals and trace-elements, salicylic acid, saccharides, lignin, enzymes, sterols) the combination of which offers more powerful effects and health-related benefits compared to each one of them separately. Thus, based on the ingredients and nutrients included, it has been proposed that aloe vera may also offer anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, analgesic and anabolic benefits. Exercise training, especially when it is unaccustomed or characterized by increased intensity, results in skeletal muscle microtrauma accompanied by elevated plasma levels of Creatine Kinase (CK), increased sensation of muscle soreness (DOMS), reduced force generating capacity and marked declines in speed and agility. Both anti-inflammatory and antioxidative mechanisms in skeletal muscle are crucial for the termination of inflammatory response and muscle healing process following exercise-induced aseptic muscle injury and inflammation. Although, it has been proposed that ale vera may elicit anti-inflammatory and antioxidative activity, its effectiveness in alleviating exercise-induced skeletal muscle injury and its symptoms, has not been investigated yet. Therefore, the aim of the present pilot study is to examine the effect of transdermal aloe veral delivery on skeletal muscle damage symptoms following an intense eccentric exercise protocol.

Taurine Supplementation and Training Effects on Energy Metabolism, Inflammation and Oxidative Stress...

Obesity

Taurine supplementation researches have increased due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions, and its ability to modulate lipid metabolism by stimulating the expression of proteins that regulates mitochondrial biogenesis and increases respiratory function (PGC-1α and PPAR) and irisin release when associated to exercise. Since obesity can induce metabolic disorders including abnormal production of adipokines and activation of pro-inflammatory signaling pathways also mitochondrial metabolism dysfunction in the adipose tissue, the use of taurine would be a new strategy for obesity prevention and treatment. Moreover, the association of taurine and exercise could improve exercise effects, promote higher energy expenditure and increase mitochondrial respiration, consequently resulting in weight loss. Therefore, the present investigation aims to evaluate the effects of the association of taurine supplementation and a combined exercise training protocol (aerobic and strength) on resting energy expenditure, weight, body composition, blood markers of inflammation and oxidative stress, telomeres length, and mitochondrial function and the expression of genes that regulates energy metabolism and lipid oxidation in the white adipose tissue in obese women.

Exercise and Diet Intervention Attenuated Inflammation Through ASC Gene and Inflammatory Markers...

Inflammatory ResponseObesity3 more

Background: Obesity is one of the most important health problems worldwide, several factors related to lifestyle as physical inactivity and unbalanced diets increase their development. This condition is characterized by low-chronic inflammation by excess of adipose tissue. The apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain (ASC) protein is part of NLRP3 inflammasome, a complex related to inflammation and metabolic alterations. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of physical exercise program on ASC gene expression and inflammatory markers in obese adults. Methods: 37 obese individuals were randomized to exercise-diet group or diet-group during a 4-month follow-up period. The dietary evaluation was analyzed by Nutritionist Pro software. Body composition was evaluated by bioimpedance (InBody 370). All biochemical determinations were analyzed by dry chemistry (Vitros 350). ASC messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression was performed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using Taqman probes and by the 2-ΔΔcq quantification method. Cytokine levels was performed using the Bio-PlexPro™ HumanTh17Cytokine Assays (MagPix) panel. Statistical analysis was performed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) v.22 software.

Comparison of Osteocentral Versus Locoregional Anesthesia in Case of Mandibular Molar Pulpitis

Endodontic Inflammation

The irreversible acute pulpitis is the most common emergency at the hospital during dental consultation. Pulpitis are characterized by intense and spontaneous oro-facial pains. In case of mandibular molar, the emergency treatment consists in realizing a pulpotomy (eviction of cameral pulp) under locoregional anesthesia called inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB). The latter represents a real challenge, since inflammation may decrease its action. To mitigate this deficiency and the drawbacks of the IANB (onset and duration of the anesthesia, bites risk reported with IANB) other anesthesias are proposed. In particular the computerized intraosseous technique anesthesia of which the Quicksleeper™ system is a part. However, according to the observers, a mild to severe tachycardia have been reported. Very few valid clinical trials exists on the subject, most being realized with systems of intraosseous anesthesia other than Quicksleeper™. Therefore, the aim of this study is first to analyze the variations of the cardiovascular parameters into two groups of anesthesia: locoregional anesthesia and Quicksleeper ™ system; and then, to compare the efficiency, side effects, operating consequences of both techniques. This study should provide better data about potential risk with computerized intraosseous technique such has Quicksleeper ™ system in healthy or cardiovascular risk patient.

The BMI Project (Body, Mind, Inflammation)

Overweight and ObesityChronic Inflammation

Obesity and chronic inflammation influence the development and progression of many types of cancer. These conditions share several of the same causes, including physical inactivity, poor nutrition, stress, and insufficient sleep. Emerging adulthood (ages 18-25) represents an important developmental period in which to address behaviors and psychological variables that affect both weight status and inflammation. At least 40% of emerging adults have overweight/obesity, and this transition from adolescence to early adulthood is associated with significant increases in fast food consumption, decreases in physical activity, unpredictable sleep schedules, and alarmingly high rates of depression and perceived stress. Despite this high risk for obesity, very few weight loss interventions are designed specifically for emerging adults. Preliminary findings from weight loss interventions targeting this population have shown some promise, but generally produce modest outcomes with less consistent effects than programs in older adults. Depression and stress have been found to interfere with weight loss among emerging adults, and may be in part responsible for poorer outcomes. This proposal will develop and test an Integrated Lifestyle Intervention (ILI) that comprehensively addresses both psychological distress and traditional weight management targets. This novel approach has not been tested before and has the potential not only to enhance weight loss outcomes in this high risk population, but also to produce reductions in markers of inflammation beyond those achievable by weight loss alone.

Comparison of MCO HD on Markers of Vascular Health Compared With On-Line Haemodiafiltration

End Stage Renal DiseaseCardiovascular Diseases1 more

The aim of this study is to evaluate haemodialysis treatment using a medium cut-off dialysis membrane (Theranova) compared with on-line haemodiafiltration treatment with respect to markers of endothelial health (plasma endothelial microvesicle levels, pro-inflammatory and pro-coagulant markers). This study will also compare the 2 treatment modalities with respect to several other outcome measures including patient-reported outcome measures, haemodynamic parameters and advanced glycation end-products.
