The Microbiome and Resilience to Sleep and Circadian Disruption

Sleep DeprivationCircadian Dysregulation1 more

This study is about how sleep loss and being awake at night impacts the ability to think, changes molecules in the blood, and alters the bacteria that live in the gut that typically help keep people healthy. This work will have important implications for the development of treatments and countermeasures for people who do not sleep enough and need to be active at different times of the day and night (e.g., emergency workers and military personnel).

Sleep Deprivation's Regulation of Immune System Function and Behavior

Sleep DeprivationSleep

The study proposes to investigate whether sleep deprivation will affect a variety of measures, including hormones, immune system functioning, and behaviors related to food intake and hunger. It is predicted that sleep deprivation will affect circulating neutrophil activity, and do so via affects on DNA methylation. It is also predicted that sleep deprivation will up-regulate ghrelin, and down-regulate circulating oxytocin. Finally, it is predicted that sleep deprivation will increase participants' tendencies to pick larger portions of food, and also increase their tendency to purchase foods that are more caloric in a mock supermarket scenario.

Start Times and Restful Sleep

Excessive Daytime SomnolenceSleep Deprivation

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of later school start times in increasing student sleep, and examine the association between later start times and physical activity, screen time, and commute time. Subjects will wear a FitBit activity tracker wristband for two separate 3-month periods (the year before and the year after the Francis Parker High School start time change in the Fall of 2020) and be advised to wear it as much as possible, especially while sleeping or performing physical activity. At the beginning and end of each study period (at 4 occasions), subjects will fill out a few short, non-invasive surveys about their commute, after-school activities, sleepiness, and preferences for morning or evening, and perform the non-invasive psychomotor vigilance test to measure alertness.

Sleep/Wake Protocol Implementation to Improve Sleep Quality in the ICU

Sleep DeprivationDelirium

The purpose of this study is to analyze a multi-component sleep/wake protocol for optimization of environmental factors (noise, light, nursing activities) as well as non-environmental factors (pain, mechanical support devices, procedures) to improve quality of sleep and decrease incidence of ICU delirium in the Cardiovascular and Surgical ICU (CVICU/SICU).

Effects of Partial Sleep Deprivation on Cognitive Function of Anesthesiologists

Cognitive DysfunctionSleep Deprivation

The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in cognitive functions at baseline and following night shift at a trauma center among faculty anesthesiologists.

Characterisation of Gut Microbiota, Bispectral Index Data and Plasma Kynurenine in Patients Undergoing...

Sleep Deprivation

The study is a case-controlled observational trial. Forty patients will be divided into 2 groups (good or poor sleepers) depending on their first postoperative night Bispectral index data. Firstly, this study aims to characterise the lung microbiota in patients treated with thyroid surgery. Secondly, it aims to evaluate microbiota and its influence on plasma kynurenine.

Validation Study for an Unobtrusive Online Sleep Measurement System

ApneaRestless Legs Syndrome1 more

The purpose of the study is to determine the precision of an unobtrusive sleep measurement system. The system measures a force sensor signal under the mattress and analyzes sleep quality. The system measures: time in bed, sleep stages, sleep fragmentation, heart rate, respiration rate, sleep related breathing disorders, and limb movements.

Home Sleep and Circadian Phase: Mediators of Diabetes Risk

Sleep DeprivationDiabetes1 more

The purpose of this study is to determine if deficient sleep and/or disruption with the body's internal clock ("circadian rhythms") are associated with diabetes risk. This study is being done to look at the possible relationships between sleep and risk of diabetes by examining sleep in the home and diabetes risk in the laboratory.
