Metabolic Syndrome and Leptin Level Associated With Fructose Consumption in Spain

A Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), will be provided to 800 adults to assess overall fructose intake and this will be related to a number of features related to the metabolic syndrome, including serum leptin, characteristic features of metabolic syndrome (body mass index, waist circumference, plasma lipids, blood pressure, HOMA index,fasting glucose and fasting insulin levels) and other as: CRP, fibrinogen, homocysteine and uric acid.

Effects of Dietary Proteins on Hepatic Lipid Metabolism

Individuals submitted to a high-fat or a high-fructose/sucrose diet develop, over a 6 day-period, several features of the metabolic syndrome, including increased plasma triglycerides, increased intrahepatic lipids, and decreased hepatic insulin sensitivity. It has been recently observed that the increase in intrahepatic lipids observed after a high fat diet is largely prevented when protein intake is concomitantly increased. This suggests that dietary protein protects the liver against some of the deleterious effects of a high fat diet. Mechanisms underlying this effect of protein may include an increased hepatic fat oxidation. The aims of this study are: to evaluate the effects of dietary protein on several major pathways involved in hepatic lipid metabolism ( ketogenesis, lipid oxidation, de novo lipogenesis, VLDL-triglyceride secretion to determine whether the decrease in intra-hepatic lipids observed when dietary protein intake is increased are to be attributed to acute or long-term effects of proteins

Acute Single Meal Effects of Trout on Cardiovascular Risk Markers and Plasma Proteome

The acute effects of farmed rainbow trout, fed by various feeds versus a control meal with poultry meat on cardiovascular risk markers and plasma protein expression are investigated. The hypotheses of the study are that if the feed are changed from a marine origin to primarily a vegetable origin the content of long chain n-3 poly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) will decrease in the meat and thus possibly result in a decreased effect on health. Furthermore, the feed of the trouts are also expected to give rise to differences in the human plasma protein profile and fatty acid composition after consumption, which could be associated with physiological effects.

Medications like olanzapine have been associated with the development of weight gain and diabetes in some patients. It is not known if the increased risk of developing diabetes is a direct effect on insulin or simply related to weight gain. We hope to learn in this study whether or not olanzapine directly slows down insulin secretion from the pancreas, thereby increasing the risk of developing diabetes.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate levels of inflammatory mediators in children at risk for cardiovascular disease due to family history. We are measuring inflammatory markers in two groups of children and their parents: children with a family history of early atherosclerotic heart disease (cases), and healthy children without such a family history (controls). The design is a cross-sectional study, gathering a fasting blood sample and clinical and behavioral data on children and a parent.
