De Novo Metabolic Syndrome in Liver Transplant Patients After Immunosuppression Withdrawal

Single Transplant5 Years of Follow-up After Transplant1 more

Evaluate de novo onset of metabolic syndrome, NAFLD and NASH in liver transplant recipients who have discontinued immunosuppressive therapy ("tolerant") and in those taking immunosuppressive therapy ("non-tolerant").

Identifying Biomarkers and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Childhood Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic SyndromeCardiovascular Disease

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is highly prevalent all over the world. MetS is largely under-diagnosed in children and adolescents. Obesity and hypertension are two important requirements for criteria of MetS. With early detection and early intervention of MetS in children and adolescents will enable better care to reduce the heavy burden of health care all over the world. Investigators intend to recruit 150 children and adolescents age 6 to 18 yr with overweight/obesity or prehypertension/hypertension and 50 normal age-matched controls to reach the following research goals: 1) To identify biomarkers as risk factors; 2) To characterize that impact of vascular assessment in preMetS children; and 3) To examine the relationship among biomarkers, vascular assessment parameters, and metabolic phenotypes.

New Insights Into the Metabolic Syndrome: the Role of Alpha Defensin

Metabolic Syndrome

The purpose of this study is to find out if there is a connection between a higher level of peptide alpha defensin in blood serum with the metabolic profile of adolescents aged 13-17.

Comorbidities and Virologic Outcome Among Patients on Anti-retroviral Therapy in Rural Lesotho

HIVMetabolic Syndrome3 more

This study is conducted in a cohort of HIV-positive patients on first-line anti-retroviral therapy (ART) in rural health facilities in Lesotho, Southern Africa. It examines virologic treatment failure as well as chronic communicable and non-communicable comorbidities among patients on ART. The study has two phases. Phase 1 consists of a cross-sectional survey to determine prevalence of treatment failure as well as the prevalence of the following comorbidities: diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, depression, alcohol use disorder, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Phase 2 is a cohort study, where patients with treatment failure or a comorbidity or both are followed-up for 12 months.

Metabolic Syndrome and Contrast Induced Nephropathy

Contrast Induced NephropathyMetabolic Syndrome

Prevention of contrast induced nephropathy after interventional cardiologic procedures deserves close interest because of its association with prolonged hospitalization, increased cost and increased in hospital and long term mortality rates. An observational prospective cohort study was designed to determine whether metabolic syndrome predicts the development of contrast induced nephropathy after elective percutaneous coronary intervention.

Evaluation of Liver Fibrosis in HIV-infected Patients With Metabolic Syndrome

Abdominal Obesity Metabolic SyndromeHIV1 more

This study aims to estimate the prevalence of bridging liver fibrosis and cirrhosis (METAVIR score ≥ F2) according to METAVIR score in HIV infected patients not chronically infected by viral hepatitis but exhibiting a metabolic syndrome according to the IDF definition (International Diabetes Foundation).

Prevalence of Lipodystrophy Syndrome and Its Role as Cause of Metabolic Disturbances

LipodystrophyMetabolic Syndrome

To evaluate the prevalence of lipodystrophy syndrome in patients receiving currently available antiretroviral drugs, and the prevalence of associated metabolic syndrome in HIV-infected patients with a previous diagnosis of lipodystrophy syndrome, according to the severity of fat accumulation and antiretroviral drug use.

Metabolic Syndrome and Female Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer

The role among metabolic syndrome and breast cancer risk is not well understood and must be further explored. The objective of this study is to evaluate the association between metabolic syndrome and breast cancer in Southern Brazil. In this case-control study, breast cancer patients and controls without malignant disease, matched for age (±5 years) and menopausal status, were interviewed and asked to make a glucose, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides test. Waist circumference and blood pressure were measured using standardized procedures. Metabolic Syndrome was considered by NCEP ATP III (2001) and IDF (2006) definitions. Cases and controls were compared in relation to the presence of diagnosed MetS (yes/no), number of metabolic abnormalities identified (1 to 5) for each definition, and according to each metabolic abnormality cutoff point.

Vascular Inflammation Stratified by Body Size Phenotype

AtherosclerosisObesity1 more

Vascular Inflammation is a key factor in both the pathogenesis and outcome of atherosclerosis. 18FDG-PET is a promising novel tool for identifying and quantifying vascular inflammation within atherosclerotic plaque Recently, unique subsets of obese individuals, such as metabolically obese but normal weight (MONW) and metabolically healthy obese (MHO), have been getting an attention Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of vascular inflammation, measured by FDG-PET, with various body sized phenotypes
