Metabolic Effect of Metformin in Obese Insulin Resistant Adolescents With Normal Glucose Tolerance...

Pediatric ObesityInsulin Resistance1 more

The primary objective of this randomized, parallel group, double-blind, placebo-controlled study is to determine whether treatment with metformin enhances insulin sensitivity in a group of ethnically diverse obese insulin-resistant adolescents with normal glucose tolerance.

NIDDM and IR in Combination Therapy for CHC

Chronic Hepatitis CInsulin Resistance

The influence of insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance on the effects of antiviral therapy for HCV remains unclear. The aim of the present study was (1) To elucidate the clinical and virological factors associated with sustained viral response in patients with combination therapy with PEG-IFN and ribavirin. (2) To clarify the influence of diabetes mellitus (DM), impaired glucose tolerance test (IGT) and insulin resistance (IR) on the HCV response to combination therapy with PEG-IFN and ribavirin. (3) To test the influence of combination therapy on HOMA IR

Study of Niacin and Rosiglitazone in Dysmetabolic Dyslipidemia

Metabolic Syndrome XInsulin Resistance

Lipid abnormalities in people with the Metabolic Syndrome (the Insulin Resistance Syndrome) are characterized by elevations in triglycerides and LDL cholesterol; low levels of HDL cholesterol; and small, dense LDL particles. Statins generally do not change LDL particle size, so often fenofibrate is added. This combination may still not be sufficient. Niacin is a common third drug added to the treatment regimen, but niacin can increase insulin resistance. This study compares niacin as a third drug to rosiglitazone, an insulin sensitizer.

Niacin, N-3 Fatty Acids and Insulin Resistance

Metabolic SyndromeHypertriglyceridemia

This research study is being conducted to test the effects of two drugs on blood lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides) and blood sugar (glucose) levels in patients with diabetes or "pre-diabetes" (both of which have a condition called "insulin-resistance"). These products are Niaspan (extended release nicotinic acid) and Omacor (omega-3 acid ethyl esters). We hypothesize that the combination of Niaspan and Omacor will reduce serum triglyceride levels, increase HDL-cholesterol levels and do so without altering glucose levels.

Insulin Resistance Intervention After Stroke Trial

StrokeMyocardial Infarction1 more

The purpose of this study is to determine if pioglitazone is effective in preventing future strokes or heart attacks among non-diabetic persons who have had a recent ischemic stroke.

The Effect of Nebivolol on Insulin Sensitivity

Hypertension

The purpose of this study is to conduct a randomised trial to compare the insulin sensitivity, 24 hour blood pressure profile, and tolerability of nebivolol plus a thiazide-like diuretic versus atenolol plus a thiazide-like diuretic.

Chromium Picolinate for the Treatment of Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic Syndrome XPrediabetic State3 more

The purpose of this study is to determine whether chromium supplements can reduce symptoms of metabolic syndrome, a collection of symptoms that increase one's risk for developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Insulin Resistance in Patients With Mood Disorder

DepressionBipolar Disorder1 more

Insulin resistance is known to be associated with mood disorders and cognitive difficulties. The purpose of this study is to treat depressed patients with rosiglitazone (also known as [AKA] Avandia), therefore improving glucose sensitivity, which in turn has the potential to affect mood and thinking. We, the researchers at Stanford University, are recruiting men and women who have been diagnosed with depression, and are willing to participate in this 3 month study. Participation involves neuropsychological testing, 2 blood draws called an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), which tests for glucose and insulin levels, and the medication, rosiglitazone. Participants are allowed to continue on their current psychiatric medication.
