Effects of Periodic Fasting Versus Daily Energy Restriction on Metabolic Health
Insulin ResistanceThe aim of this study is to examine whether periodic fasting improves markers of diabetes risk and cardiovascular health, and will compare this to the effects observed with daily dieting by energy restriction, and also with no change in energy intake. It is hypothesized that periodic fasting, with or without weight loss, will be as effective as daily energy restriction to improve markers of metabolic health and energy metabolism.
Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibition and Immune Function in HIV
DiabetesInsulin ResistanceWe will test the safety of a new class of anti-diabetes compounds (DPPIV-inhibitors) in people living with HIV. Future trials will examine efficacy for treating diabetes and reducing cardiovascular disease risk in people living with HIV.
The Metabolic Effects of Consuming Sugar-Sweetened Beverages for Two Weeks
Metabolic SyndromeInsulin Resistance1 moreThe purpose of this study is to examine the effects of consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages on blood triglycerides and cholesterol, cholesterol concentrations, and the body's sensitivity to insulin.
The Effect of the Preoperative Oral Carbohydrate Attenuating Immediate Postoperative Insulin Resistance...
Colorectal DiseaseThe purpose of this study is to delineate the effects of preoperative oral carbohydrate on immediate postoperative insulin resistance (PIR) in patients undergoing elective open colorectal cancer resection, and to further clarify the hypotheses that preoperative oral carbohydrate treatment attenuates PIR in patients by enhancing insulin signaling to PI3K-dependent pathway.
Is Insulin Resistance and/or Glucose Intolerance Pathogenetic in the Development of a Reduced Incretin...
Insulin ResistanceGlucose IntoleranceThe purpose of this study is to examine whether there is a causal relationship between insulin resistance and/or glucose intolerance in the development of a defect incretin effect.
Cassia Cinnamon for Glucose Uptake in Young Women
Insulin ResistanceImpaired Glucose Tolerance1 moreThe purpose of this study was to compare the acute effects of 5g of Cassia cinnamon, 50 minutes of endurance exercise performed at 70% of the heart rate reserve (correlated to VO2max), and 5g of cellulose placebo on blood glucose, serum insulin and insulin sensitivity following an oral glucose tolerance test 3 hours after administration of each intervention.
Effects of Etravirine on Endothelial Function in HIV-uninfected Adults: A Pilot Study
Endothelial FunctionLipids3 moreThe purpose of this study is to determine the safety and effects of etravirine, an HIV antiretroviral medication, on vascular function.
A Randomized Clinical Trial To Study Losartan On Endothelial Dysfunction and Insulin Resistance...
ObesityHypertension1 moreThe main purposes of this study are to find out if the study drug losartan (Cozaar) or placebo ("sugar pill") has an effect on insulin sensitivity (how your body responds to insulin) and to measure the effect of the study drug losartan or placebo on how the arteries in your arm dilate (enlarge to carry more blood). We hope to learn if taking losartan changes the amount of certain proteins in the blood that effect blood vessel function. Losartan is approved by the US FDA to treat high blood pressure. It will take approximately 4 months for you to complete this study.
Effect of Preoperative Supplementation in Insulin Resistance
Liver DiseaseTo elucidate the effect of preoperative supplementation of carbohydrate and branched-chain amino acids on postoperative insulin resistance in patients undergoing hepatic resection, we set a randomized trial.
Effects of Fish Oils on Inflammation and Insulin Resistance
Metabolic SyndromeInsulin ResistanceThe purpose of this study is to determine whether improvement in fat and muscle metabolism after the treatment with Omacor (fish oils) provides insight into the link between obesity, fat and muscle function leading to metabolic syndrome, which is a risk factor for heart disease and diabetes.
